If you receive an academic grant, the outcome usually takes the shape of a series of scientific papers. But these don't always completely cover the question "so what have you learned?" In my latest blog for the Meta-Research Center, I attempt to answer this question. 🧵

PSA If you're going to include a link to your / your project's website in a permanent repository (e.g. a grant website), make sure to buy the domain for at least 10 years so it is not hijacked by an AI adult entertainment company after your project's over. The link will still be there...

This is unexpectedly awesome: Zenodo allows reserving a DOI before depositing the materials, so you can include the DOI in the materials themselves. This is very helpful because you can include the identifier in the metadata itself.

Oh, that didn't take much digging. They asked people to solve stupid fraction problems. One group got to ask AI, the other group didn't. Then they took the AI away from the AI group. Those people started fucking off. The non-AI group didn't magically know it was time to start fucking off.

Although you're right that there is no "right" answer for every case, we do have general guidelines. Section 6.36 of the Publication Manual (7th ed.) says that "when properly scaled, most data can be effectively presented with two decimal digits of accuracy."

One major potential shortcoming of this publish-review-curate model and platform is that currently it does not bring you as much street cred / publicity as an accepted submission at a €8000 journal with decades-long history and recognition. Changing that depends on our motivations & behavior.

On the other hand, as a community of scholars uninhibited by legacy systems and the corrupting motivations of for-profit publishers, we can be far more transparent, faster, and directly provide for the research community's needs.

An author considering citing or building on this paper can now quickly see what other area experts thought of the paper (and how it was revised in response). Editors (of collections, textbooks, whatever) can similarly see the paper in context and make better informed decisions.

The paper remains hosted on a preprint archive, for a tiny fraction of the cost a journal would charge (these costs are not relevant to readers or authors). Similarly for the evaluation and curation of the paper, which are now citeable scientific objects subject to scrutiny.

Their pre-registration says they'll use n=848, and they therefore don't do a power analysis. But then in the actual replication they're down to n=224. They then say "This doesn't replicate" because p=0.19. But its directionally similar and they have one-quarter of the sample!

Good talk. There's a lot of (over)thinking of this at the moment. Zenodo just works. (Until it doesn't when we and our bots ruin that as well.) Collaborate on GitHub and refer to zenodo.

I do like a good revolution, but here the thoughtful application of established methods seems a more fruitful approach.

"Replication crisis" reforms like preregistration & pre-analysis plans were developed to control false positives in experimental research. Does that work in observational studies? Our new paper in Sociological Methods & Research argues for a different approach. 🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Fun story. As I was a grad student I published a 1st-author paper on co-rumination in J of Adolescence that got discussed in the NYT (side note, the reporter interviewed me but only named my advisor in the story). Our PR office wanted to build on it for more press, so they wrote up a press release…

New paper! Despite qualitative researchers claiming that generalizability is not a goal, their published work does indeed contain generalizable claims. We document this and provide recommendations for how all researchers can better calibrate their generalizability claims. doi.org/10.1177/2515...

Papers I would like to explore: - Against SESOI: More arbitrary thresholds = More arbitrary science - Against value-driven science: open, team, or interdisciplinary science doesn't make your study more valid - Abandon "best practices" and explain your reasoning instead

1. We used a multidimensional cultural distance measure to quantify how culturally different the 41 groups were to the US where the typical hierarchy was first documented. The closer a sample was to the US culturally, the more similar its hierarchy of moral concern.

If there's something positive in the ai/science discourse it has made more ppl reflect on why humanity keeps doing science beyond instrumental accounts-- for some, not only is the pursuit of knowledge inherently valuable but also defines collective curiosity & shapes our other values

Season 8 of Quantitude off to a strong start. Loved the true crime framing here -- especially since we all know who's guilty!

S8E01 The True Crimes of Null Hypothesis Significance Testing Patrick and Greg find it deeply unfair that the podcast hasn’t grown popular enough to fund a Quantitude jet. So they try to make it a true crime podcast, and revisit the case of Null Hypothesis Significance Testing.

This is relevant, again: "Preprints—scholarly manuscripts not yet captured by the publication industry—are widely read and circulated, yet the ‘intellectual perestroika‘ they could facilitate hasn’t been uniformly realized..."

Against Publishing: universonline.nl/nieuws/2025/... Preprints are read, shared, and cited, yet still dismissed as incomplete until blessed by a publisher. I argue that the true measure of scholarship lies in open exchange, not in the industry’s gatekeeping of what counts as published.
