There's no point to these online spaces anymore. X is just filled with bots and Nazis, Instagram is mainly AI slop, narcissists, and entertainers pushing their brand. Facebook is unusable and BlueSky just about forbids any type of interaction. Maybe it's time I relearned how to read books/be bored.

I fucking hate all journal websites. Taxpayers funded most of the work published in these journals, yet accessing Springer Nature is like trying to hack into the Secret Service. "Login via your institution" 15 times, followed by 10k verification checks, FOR EVERY ARTICLE YOU WANT TO READ. WHY?

Listen, someone get the original negative and bury it in a field with three cowries, black soap and a goats horn. This is how we save the world!

Do you want to see the most cursed photo of all time?

My key takeaway from this is that his wife might be about to fire him...

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

drilling for more gas then telling us to stockpile because of the climate crisis is like digging a deeper and deeper hole because you know a guy who sells long ladders

That's so ludicrous. As far as I'm concerned that's like saying you've never heard of HTML.

John O’Donnell@jodami.bsky.social

Maybe the BBC should get someone who actually knows what he is talking about then.

Londoners! I've made a website that discovers everything going on in the physical world of London (talks, exhibitions, gigs, plays, etc.) and finds stuff it thinks you'll like. You teach it your interests by swiping events left or right. Decent recs after ~100 swipes. Check out realworld.events!

realworld.eventsrealworld.events: what’s on in London, picked for youSwipe through London’s upcoming events: right if it’s your kind of thing, left if not, and the deck learns your taste. Filter by date, evening, area and type.

Omg. One of the things that absolutely infuriated me about Cal Newport's Deep Work book was the way he just casually blew off all collegiate activities. "I don't agree to be on committees, attend admin meetings or have corridor conversations". Cool story.

Prof. Anthea Butler@antheabutler.bsky.social

Let me just say I felt a lot of this thread and that's why I retired from Penn.

Microsoft Outlook is so shit. Why do we put up with it? For example, why can't I simply copy and paste a list of all my appointments/activities in my calendar? Why can't I just generate a list of free spots and send it to someone? What the fuck is that?

You know what's so fucking infuriating about this bullshit about the Greens "making themselves unelectable"? The idea that they were ever going to get a sniff of power anyway. Like, what delusional game are we playing? From the moment they emerged as a threat, the media went batshit smearing them.

The Chi. Seasons 1 and 2 are great. Season 3 is so-so, and by Season 4 it was unwatchable. Just had to give up.

Nev Fountain@nevfountain.bsky.social

What TV show got so bad it effectively destroyed your appreciation for the show when it was was good?

The centrist dads/ white moderates are at it again with their fucking bullshit. "Right wing proto-fascists are doing some good work dialing down the hatred they stirred up not so long ago with their xenophobic rhetoric. I'm impressed with the way they're drawing the line at interpersonal racism".

These people repeatedly demonstrate that they are fucking marks. No wonder fucking blatant gifters like Trump and Johnson are just sailing through the system. They run rings around these fools who think that they're the "sensible grown up ones" when really they're just mugs who can't learn lessons.

I'm so confused. Doesn't this also apply to Zionism itself?

Chaminda Jayanetti@cjayanetti.bsky.social

re "Zionism is racism" - it's a cornerstone of British equality law that discrimination need not be intentional for it to be discriminatory I'm not making *legal* claims about the Green Party motion - but a policy that would render the vast majority of Jews as personae non gratae is flatly racist

Happy Black History Month. Celebrate by buying my books (*fast voice* Other history books are available, terms and conditions apply, all history is Black history when you make Black stories the focus and therefore you should buy my books every month not just this one) geni.us/HistorysMost...

The implicitly racist responses to this are quite something.

Reading the details of the US execution story from last night and it is absolute barbarism. Like reading a history of the medieval period.

I see this video of a war-mongering, bloodthirsty sociopath shittalking while smiling that shit-eating grin and I'm, reminded of Bush, Blair and Rumsfeld and how absolutely nothing whatsoever happened to them. This guy talks like this because he knows he will never be punished.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hegseth: "It's worth saying again so the fake news understands it. We are no longer the woke department or the weak department. Simple translation of that -- no fatties no trannies no beardos no weirdos no wimps no radicals. Just warriors."

I never believed in Citeh's titles anyway. Broken FFP rules or not, their success was always tainted by the stench of grubby, stolen wealth, just like Chelsea's. When they won, I dismissed it as purchased glory. When they lost, I smirked, but felt little. Liverpool and Man U, on the other hand...

Last year, pundits twisted themselves in knots trying to understand why everyone hates Arsenal and why no one wanted us to win the title. It wasn't set pieces and dark arts that annoyed people. No, it's the fact that rivals can't dismiss the success in the same way they do for Citeh and Chelsea.

The simple fact is The Sopranos should be top of that fucking list IRREGARDLESS of what it started. Yeah, it is better than The Wire for Rosalie Aprile alone. (And I fucking LOVE The Wire.)

1/ People keep saying AI is inevitable. History disagrees. Plenty of technologies were called unstoppable, and societies stopped them or shrank them down to a niche. A thread 🧵

Every single element of that Daily Mail front page is fucking repellant. From the concern trolling crap about Cindy Crawford son, to the intentional juxtaposition of the small boats story next to pictures of stoned faced Nadiya making Ed Sheeran cry. Absolutely appalling stuff.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

When these fellas talk about an extinction level threat from AI, they're not really talking about all of humanity are they? Like, outside of nukes, what are we really talking about? An existential threat to tech bros and the nerd oligarchy. That's who is in danger. The rest of us will be fine.

The "stop the boats" movement is being driven by the type of English suburban racist who thinks that one black family living in their street is one too many. Yes, it really is as simple as that, and it has been for decades. There is no intellectual depth to this stuff. It is pure, distilled hate.

"Oh look, it's whatsherface from the 3rd floor. Gosh, she seemed so lovely and like she would be someone to hide me in her attic when the time came. Oh well". It is now my deep fear that one day soon I will recognise one of these people as a "corridor colleague" and I'll just have to resign.

A detail missing from The Times story… the woman who took the photo shared it to a Facebook group called ‘South east patriots’.

When I was growing up there were kids who were so deeply stigmatised by racial hatred they'd say anything to distance themselves from their ethnicity. Braverman definitely told kids in the playground she didn't eat curry at home and that she had a white aunty. "We had bread and dripping for tea".

A Reform government would force schools to sing the National Anthem and if they don't oblige parents will be encouraged to report them to the authorities. Yeah that's not like really scary and authoritarian schoolsweek.co.uk/reform-there...

This is the key point. These "protesters" are effectively demonstrating their support for government policies. It's a rally not a protest. You don't arrest your supporters. In contrast, the government does oppose the views of pro-Palestinian protestors and people wanting to reduce GHG emissions.

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

The black outfit mask guys have had years of politicians fighting each other to win their approval, with all-channels unanimity that they are justified and correct. The granny and the vicar have had a decade of incredibly hostile screaming hatred from the very top of politics and media. Thus
