October 27, 1962, was arguably the most dangerous day of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a day when human error, rushed preparations, aggressive tactics, and sky-high tensions could have set off World War III intentionally or by accident at least four separate times. Here’s what happened (a long thread):

Neither the consequences nor the astonishing nature of this victory are being discussed enough.

If Bolsonaro had won, Brazil would be the enforcer of Trump's 'Donroe doctrine' in Latin America. It would have withdrawn from BRICS, & sold its critical minerals to the US Lula's win ensures Brazil's advocacy of a fairer, more multipolar world and more rhyming of development with decarbonization.

What's good for the market is bad for the people. Seeing the foreign investors that were looking to loot Brazil run away is heartwarming.

In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.

Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

🤔 they can’t get anyone to migrate to their events?

It’s been a wild 24 hours for me on BlueSky and I’m getting so many messages asking what can be learned from Brazil and applied globally on top of the below. Once again, I’m not a political expert but this is what I’ve seen as a consensus amongst specialists and voters so far 🧵

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. So much to say about Brazil, not least of which is the role that Erika Hilton, a Black trans leader and most voted woman politician in Brazil, played in mobilizing folks for Lula. She was behind the critical, concrete, economic promise of shorter work-week. theprint.in/feature/erik...

More shocking displays by Bolsonaro supporters in the last 24 hours: voters wearing T-shirts that say “long live fascism,” doing a Nazi salute when entering the polls, and a white man walking a Black man on a chain at a pro-Bolsonaro gathering in Rio de Janeiro.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

That sizeable gap between the first and second round in the Brazil elections is fascinating because it gives you a trailer of what each leader will be like in power. Lula was saying, how can we move forward as a nation. Bolsonaro’s message was “look who we will get to hurt once we are in charge“.

Owner at my local cafe in Berlin came to take my order and within a minute she was saying “oh my god Brazil gives me hope”. She was overflowing with joy. Something extraordinary happened last night. I keep thinking about the alternate timeline, if Bolsonaro had won, and I shudder.

Sometimes it just dawns on me how deeply weird and wild this situation is. A company making a crappy, unchecked and badly designed product, but thanks to pre-existing science fiction narratives they can aggressively tout their own failures and inadequacies as reasons for self-regulation
