Calling all ice sheet and glacier modelers and cryo machine learning experts! We especially need your expertise as editors for @igsoc-pubs.bsky.social

Due to a healthy increase in submissions to the Journal of Glaciology & to accommodate some retirements / personal leaves from our Editorial Board, the IGS is looking for several new Scientific Editors (SEs) to serve the @igsoc-pubs.bsky.social. Deadline October 30th! www.igsoc.org/jglac-new-ses

I want to talk a little bit about this new Science paper led by star student Caroline Needle, Catherine Walker and myself. The idea goes back to this controversial new idea called the marine ice cliff instability. @whoi.edu @umich.edu

science.orgEmpirical constraints on ice cliff calvingWhen calving cliffs at the margins of Earth’s ice sheets exceed a critical height, runaway retreat may be initiated in a process called the marine ice cliff instability. However, sufficiently tall ice...

Tapio Schneider is one of the scientists I look to most to distinguish AI-useful from AI-hype in climate science world. His thoughtful post on the Navier-Stokes blowup is a great example - AI is useful when experimental verification and data density can substitute for physical understanding... 1/2

It lays out the reasoning behind how we use AI at CliMA.] ...

Had a blast working with @iceclimate.bsky.social in the ICCL group over the last few years! Many thanks to my committee and everyone else in the GT EAS crew for a truly memorable ride.

Congrats to our newest Dr., Shiva Muruganandham! He blew us away with his dissertation "Exploring Sea Level Futures: From Antarctic Ice Loss to Coastal Flood Adaptation"

The second half of his PhD went all the way to the other end of the sea level problem, where he has developed an ML-based emulator of a building-scale coastal compound flood model, which can be used to evaluate the effect of coastal adaptation infrastructure on flooding in seconds

Fourth, collaborate with faculty and staff doing work related to ES, community engagement, and faculty diversity and equity initiatives to develop a shared institutional vision for rewarding and/or supporting engaged scholarship.

It’s Fall 🍎🍁which means new classes, new textbooks and…tenure packet submissions. My own experience with the tenure process led me to get very curious how institutions do and don’t reward engaged scholarship in the tenure process. 🧵

2️⃣ Temporal autocorrelation in ice sheet surface melt is strongly susceptible to spurious trends on multi-decadal time scales, regardless of the ice sheet's proximity to destabilization

1️⃣ In a warming world, variability of surface melt in low-accumulation ice sheet regions will increase, regardless of the ice sheet's proximity to destabilization

So what causes increasing variability? Prior work shows that as bare ice area increases over Greenland, the ice surface becomes more sensitive to incoming shortwave radiation. Ice sheet thinning amplifies this sensitivity but is not necessary to explain it doi.org/10.1126/scia...

doi.orgGreenland Ice Sheet surface melt amplified by snowline migration and bare ice exposureGreenland’s snowline exhibits large fluctuations and is a primary amplifier of ice sheet surface melt and runoff.

We were surprised to find that year-to-year variability has increased over most of the ice sheet, even though these model simulations are not coupled to evolving ice sheet elevation

This isn’t consistent with a recent study which argues that trends in variance and autocorrelation of surface melt in Greenland are “early-warning signals” of ice sheet destabilization through a feedback between melt and ice sheet height doi.org/10.1073/pnas...

Walked through the OpenAI Navier Stokes breakthrough in my graduate-level Ocean Dynamics class today and ended on this slide. We had a super thought-provoking and respectful conversation with a huge range of opinions. Georgia Tech students rock! 🐝

The California coast is about to be a time machine to what every day in 2060 will look like

Anthony Edwards@edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social

An El Niño-induced coastally-trapped Kelvin wave will likely raise water levels about 9-14 inches (relative to 1993-2025 averages) along the California coast in early October. Water temperatures will also increase. The sudden increase will be as much as “the entire climate change anomaly in one go”

Earlier this month, a 76 sq km section of Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland broke away. The newly formed tabular iceberg covers an area about the same size of Manhattan and is estimated to be up to 150 metres thick. This huge loss was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar vision ⬇️
