Been reading about a lot of very bad but entirely ordinary people throughout history for the next season of Past Lives (Everyday Villains). This guy is utterly typical. 1) Doesn't think he's doing anything wrong. 2) Permission structure in a system of hierarchical authority. 3) Benefits materially.

there it is wouldn’t it be great if in the news next week there was a Rape Crisis Centre reports a significant increase in donations as a direct consequence of O’Callaghan being a numpty dangerous untrained political voice -~ well something like that going to do this now

Izzy Kamikaze@izzykamikaze.bsky.social

This is Dublin Rape Crisis Centre's donations page. Now would be a really good time to show your support for all their work - including education on consent. www.drcc.ie/donate/

Doctors charging you for your baby's time in the NICU is like firefighters charging you to put out your burning house. We should all be paying (via collective taxation) to save members of our communities.

Today's topic: Singular effects shots that nearly ruined a movie for you. I mean when a movie that has deftly suspended your disbelief, then one shot or effect pulls you right out, for a bit at least. If they'd just cut that one thing the experience would have been 🤌, but no... No spoilers

First up is one I liked a lot: Iron Lung. In a movie otherwise *maniacally* fixated on the MC's POV inside a primitive submarine at the bottom of an ocean of blood, there's one shot that breaks this rule and looks terrible doing it. Why?! It added nothing and would be bad even if it looked okay!

Second is Starship Troopers. Even more than today this era was about understanding the limitations of CGI. Giant alien bugs? Polygonal, no transparency to deal with in compositing. 👍 Giant Alien Bug Napalm? Liquid and fire, so two different fluids?? That are going to interact with a person?!?? 💩

Good thread is good. And yeah it's kinda crazy to write up a whole piece about the consequences of court expansion while ignoring that it isn't coming up just because it sucks that the court has more conservatives on it. Like the phrase "ideologically favorable", that's not the level we're at dude

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

In short, I feel like the damages listed in the piece have already been done, and failing to reckon with the damage that has been done is just not a useful way to handle how to manage the Court.

Spouse once worked for an infant hearing screener co, inside a hospital. It simple, only took ~20 minutes, but scheduling was rough cus newborns and parents are busy. But also getting permission cus parents had to figure out if they were covered. When they had Medicaid, spouse could just *do it*

I never once got 3039575894921 spam scam calls at the end of the year because it was open enrollment for Medicaid Advantage Plans bc those don't exist cuz Medicaid just pays for everything so everything is free at the point of service

Baby's back in the neonatal unit for whatever reason? Parents on Medicaid? Sweet, new parents, here's the result of the screen. Aren't you glad? Shouldn't this be automatic? Well it is for you! Sucks to have private insurance lol (Can't compare this with Medicare, but point is Medicaid was 👍)

This county, an hour from DC, has one of the biggest races for immigrants’ rights in the nation, imo. Make sure people know about it.

This is super cool, but I do have one important question: In any of these remasters and upgrades... Have they added arrays to quakec?!?!

Dominic Tarason@dominictarason.com

For those who haven't played Quake since the 90s, the scene has undergone an amazing renaissance. There's always been good Quake mods, but it feels like the release of Arcane Dimensions in 2015 revitalized everything. Since then, Nightdive have remastered the game and Machinegames have expanded it.

Things Gavin Newsom has vetoed this week: -A ban on secretly recording people with smart glasses -A ban on ICE agents working for the state government -A ban on websites selling your data -A bill giving native tribes more say over water rights -A bill protecting transgender healthcare providers

*briefly taking the pipe from my mouth and looking away from the Sunday paper (funnies) In my day, kids, "is lez-bee-ab" was considered a major selling point. *puff puff

That IS funny, because one complaint I've seen floating around goes like this: "BORRRRGH scromit. why did they show Motoko getting backshots from her gf? WHY IS SHE LESBIAB? IS THIS A GOONER ANIMU BLOOOOAAARGH"
