A reminder that the mobile web page version of Bluesky works perfectly well. You do not need to download an app that may spy on you and run your device's battery down. Unlike the app, once you close the bsky.app browser tab, Bluesky is no longer connected to your phone.

v1.135 is live! You can now browse quote posts by Top in addition to Latest. And posts keep their thread numbering when quoted. These changes are rolling out now. If you don’t see them yet, try refreshing your browser or visiting the app store to make sure you’ve updated to the latest version.

For people wondering when the AI bubble is going to pop, I present you with this message, received by a paid-in-full customer of OpenAI. Not a good look when you have to tell paying customers you've run out of resources.

Upgrading my wife's iPhone SE to a 17Pro - over an hour of watching it get stuck and start over before finally discovering the BRAND NEW PHONE needed a software update before the transfer could work. What a pathetic fail, Apple! (My Samsung upgrade worked perfectly 1st try) #Apple #iPhone

Seriously, shipping a product to customers preventing it's use right out of the box is just a mind-blowing quality failure. How many #iPhone17 customers will have to waste an afternoon at the store getting this resolved? #Apple

Curious to know what repairability is like on the new Jony Ive designed Ferrari Luce. Knowing Ive, it's completely glued/welded shut. If it breaks down you're expected to throw it out and buy a new one. [Photo via Trung Phan]

So this is weird: I got an email from USPassportRenewal@state.gov claiming "Our records indicate your U.S. passport will expire within 1 year." This is wrong - my passport is good for another six years. Anybody else seen this? @alt18f.bsky.social

My first thought of course was "scam", but the handful of links in the email all go directly to legit and obvious state department sites about how to renew your passport.

Setting aside all the jokes that one could make, can you imagine being asked "In your view, should 4 million people, who along with their ancestors have only ever lived here, be deported" and being like "gee, maybe?"

GORSUCH: Do you think Native Americans are birthright citizens under your test? SAUER: Ah, I think ... so. I have to think that through.

One thing I like about our current tech landscape: Simplisafe: "The battery within the Key Fob cannot be replaced." YouTube: "To replace the Key Fob battery, just pry it open here with a screwdriver..."

Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti. "Please get the truth out about our son."

I just realized the profit end game for AI. It's the same thing that fueled Facebook, Google and all the other tech behemoths: Advertising. As Internet search shifts from search engines to chatbots, this is the next frontier for AI companies.

Chatbots will be paid untold billions to tell you what to buy, where to go, what to watch. And with the billions of SuperPAC money - who to vote for.

Micron ending it's Crucial consumer DRAM brand is a sign of a larger issue: Computation going from individual ownership and moving to data centers you have rent resources from. See also steadily rising prices on new GPU cards and SSDs. The future is a Chromebook and a $150/month data center bill.

If anybody knows somebody at YouTube, make sure they get this message. Otherwise, some McKinsey idiot will come in ignoring this fact and YouTube will go down the drain too.

Last thought because I should be drawing: part of why facebook is utter trash now whereas youtube still has good stuff is simply that youtube actually splits a lot of their revenue with creators. It may not last, but it means the ecosystem has money coming in to make better stuff. May it remain.

Question: A lot of PC apps like CAD, Adobe, etc. are inherently two-handed. Many mouse operations are shift-click, option-click, etc. Have you found a solution for holding the shift key while you operate the mouse? Are there special keyboards that just have latching shift/option/control keys? Thanks

SSDs are pretty reliable in a technical sense.
That is, unless you make a really, really bad mistake in firmware.
HP had a line of ~20 different Enterprise SSD models for datacenter use.
In exactly 3 years, 270 days and 8 hours, every one is irrecoverably bricked.
