If advocating for peace, justice & meaningful action on climate change is extremist. Consider me one. If being critical of growing inequality, tax loopholes & havens, corporations that don't pay taxes, breaches of international law & human rights & genocide is extremist. Then count me as one #auspol

Jeff Sparrow, always on point. I was seriously considering a career in academia two decades ago, one of my tutors talked me out of it. He said universities were becoming privatised corporate hellholes and life for academics was precarious. One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received.

The fantasy novel I'm writing has hit 46,000 words and I feel like I'm close to two thirds of the story. This is uncharted territory for me. I've never been this far in with a story. The bad thing is it's progressing slowly. The good thing is it's progressing steadily every time I have time #writing

Few people make me feel sane in a world gone mad more than @naomiaklein.bsky.social Arundhati Roy and @karenhao.bsky.social. This was the highlight of my day today

It’s not often that Basque culture features in the ABC or any mainstream media in Australia, apart from occasional articles praising Basque food and cheesecakes, for anyone curious here’s a little bit about the Basque community in Queensland that came out of nowhere today.

As Madison says, she and her mother are already working so hard to ensure that their loved ones have a decent life and the government wants to push them into a situation where they will have to choose between having a home and continuing to provide that care. WTF are we doing here, Labor? #auspol

This is another side of the Albanese government's utter cruelty and inhumanity. When NDIS is slashed families will be destroyed, lives will be destroyed, so the Australian government can continue giving gas away and increase investing in submarines, weapons and the army. #auspol

The Great Gas Giveaway just hit $78billon. And look, tbf, the gas companies are doing it tough. The government choosing to not do a 25% tax on gas exports is only fair - not like there are any needs currently being unmet... health, education, care, poverty, disability... live.thepoint.com.au

Three weeks out from her election Trump has sent Federal agents in to raid US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. This is part of his attack on migrants, especially Somali migrants. We need to resist this racist authoritarian politics wherever it rises. Wrong in the US, wrong here too.

asbestos is such a depressing case, indeed: "Looking back in the light of present knowledge, it is impossible not to feel that opportunities for discovery and prevention of asbestos disease were badly missed." Thomas Legge, ex Chief Medical Inspector of Factories, in Industrial maladies, 1934

An important and provocative message to literary festivals and book awards. Should the ABIA Awards have a comics/graphic novel category? The UK counterpart does. Should the CBCA Awards have a comics category? Food for thought.

“Maybe the exclusion of comics from the official literary scene is a blessing, and it’s up to the rest of the arts community to sort out their own platforms.” Joshua Santospirito talks (and draws) himself out of demanding that comics be more widely included in literary festivals.

I think there's a lot of climate and energy people in Australia who'll laugh this off as impossible but the tech economy is not logical and renewables being cheap does not shave a single joule of enthusiasm for tech's seething desperation for fossil fuels right now.

Being part of the organising committee of MAKE has been easily the highlight of this year. A bloody amazing team to work with but there’s no festival without awesome comics creators and people coming in to check it all out. Today was amazing and we have an awesome festival in Melbourne #Comics

Day 1 and 2 of MAKE, the Melbourne Alternative Comics Expo: An amazing Talking to Pictures at The Wheeler Centre and an incredible set of panel talks and presentations at RMIT University including comics creators, agents, editors and publishers, closing with Shaun Tan & Campbell Whyte #comics

* Speaking to Pictures, not talking to pictures. The problem with posting at 6am when you’re still waking up 😅🙄

Forget grandiose talk of curing cancer - this is what AI is actually doing to healthcare. In the words of one cardiologist: “it’s bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents, a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in.”

A few weeks ago we broke news Thales and the Australian gov are making explosives for the IDF. I assume you've noticed mainstream press hasn't followed this up? Anyway, I'm sure it has nothing to do with anything, but Thales is a sponsor of the National Press Club.

We broke significant national news this week and not a single mainstream media outlet wanted to cover it or follow up. It isn't surprising, but it is illustrative. Put simply, they're all owned and operated by Zionist billionaires. This is why indie media needs to exist.

With everyone, I am grieving the loss of Marjane Satrapi today. The world is not kind to artists nor are we always kind to ourselves. This makes being kind to each other even more important. Love your friends and family and make your beautiful books. These actions become more meaningful together.
