This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

The rich get richer in visual processing: latest study with @ivntmc.bsky.social shows that we allocate resources preferentially to stimuli that we feel confident in estimating, which makes us better at estimating them...even if the initial confidence was misplaced. doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Weird, how reality is more alarming than ostensibly "alarmist" climate scientists were not too long ago. And this is still just at the beginning of a warming trend that will continue for several decades at least (unless human beings suddenly become much smarter than ever before. I have my doubts.)
The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.

To adapt to a new prior, tuning curves should "move" toward more frequent stimuli ('prior attraction'). But in adaptation studies they are shown to move away from the more frequent stimuli ('adapter repulsion'). Oh also how do tuning curves move at all?? www.nature.com/articles/s41...
