“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.

techpolicy.pressTech Hype is Cannibalizing the FutureEvery day, we are told that we live in the future—but hype is eating the future and leaving us the bones," writes Sun-ha Hong.

It’s not the biggest problem with this idea but it’s dumb all around.

An area of California desert was recently lit up at night, baffling locals. Turns out it was the latest step in a US startup's bid to put 50,000 satellites in space to reflect sunlight back to Earth at nighttime via giant mirrors. This quest has many critics. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Guess the date. "In from 3-8 years we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being. I mean a machine that will be able to read Shakespeare, grease a car, play office politics, tell a joke, have a fight."

"... At that point the machine will begin to educate itself with fantastic speed. In a few months it will be at genius level and a few months after that its powers will be incalculable."

This evening @stsucl.bsky.social I very much enjoyed Professor Simon Werrett’s professorial inaugural lecture on science and seabirds in the 18th century. It was characteristically excellent #histsci

A shame that Led By Donkeys feel that they have to repeat this story. The real issues are to do with inequality, not apocalypse.

You can go to today’s universities and see what excellence actually looks like or you can be ignorant and lazy and sneer at ‘Mickey Mouse’ degrees at post-92 universities instead. Good to see Victoria Derbyshire choosing the intelligent option and reporting on it.

Victoria Derbyshire@vicderbyshire.bsky.social

Then at University of Winchester where I opened their new state-of-the-art TV studio (like the actual green screen studios we have in broadcast media); the undergraduates doing degrees in journalism and multi media are really lucky to have such superb facilities. They were a joy to spend time with.

Often, it is assumed that we social scientists are interested in the IMPLICATIONS of technology. I think instead we should look at the INFERENCES of technology - not what it implies for society, but what it infers about society in its making.

Late to this Bloomberg piece on Marc Andreessen. This is one of the key things. Andreessen is *angry* about how he has been treated, when any objective observer might note he has benefited enormously from the institutions he now purports to detest. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

So much this. You've no reason to take my response all that seriously, but you should certainly heed Melanie's.

What, an Anthropic researcher states (without evidence) that there is a 10% chance that AI will cause human extinction? Incredible, we have never before heard such a claim!

At the Creators Emergency Summit on AI in London. A revelation from Pete Wishart MP. Wishart (ex-Runrig) runs the parliamentary band, MP4. Guess which former culture secretary didn't make the audition to join on 2nd guitar?

Just to compare and contrast Narayan today with Starmer in early 2025 - whereas last year we were mainlining AI, now we're hardening our defences. A lot can change quite quickly.

This piece I have written for @prospectmagazine.co.uk says things about the AI narrative being pushed by the industry that I have been wanting to say for some time. I hope it might help to bring about a more critical and discerning position in the media. www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/techno...

I kind of also want to say it was probably 100000s, large OU foundation courses at their peak reached 10000 students a year and the course teams Stuart was part of spanned 18 years.

Liz McFall@allartmarkets.bsky.social

Love to see this but man the Story of the Walkman was an Open University textbook written towards the end of Stuart’s 18 year tenure there. He taught 10000s of OU students & that seems kind of airbrushed out of his legacy www.theguardian.com/society/2026...
