Some good #dataviz discussion on the pros/cons on the usage of choropleth maps in this thread, and who has responsibility for clarity and understanding.

Alberto Cairo@albertocairo.com

As much as I like lovely exercises like this, we need to stop saying that the choropleth map is "misleading". It can be misleading *if you don't know how to read it for the purpose it was created for*—to show who won were, nothing else. The problem isn't the map, but its improper interpretation.

Wool socks for every day of the week, baby!

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

We love accessible #dataviz! Kudos to the DW team for putting in the work to make this possible.

🎉 All Datawrapper visualizations you embed can now be fully navigated by keyboard! That’s a big step in our effort to make them even more accessible. Plus: we now support dynamic font scaling that adjusts to the browser-wide default font size. Learn more: www.datawrapper.de/blog/keyboar...

It took me less than 15 minutes to vote on Friday, even with a short line. I highly recommend it to every Virginia voter!

Early Voting for the November 3, 2026 Election has begun! Early Voting is open Monday-Friday from 9 am-5 pm. All registered voters in Arlington are eligible to vote in this election. Verify your voter registration and make a plan to vote! https://vote.arlingtonva.gov/Elections

Can confirm that Dani is wonderful at all of these things. Any #dataviz team would be lucky to have her!

a few weeks of unemployment have given me plenty of time to quilt, look at birds, and contemplate the terrifying expanse of "transferable skills." anyway, if anyone needs someone who's good at data viz, visual storytelling, and leading creative teams, hello! 👋

I'm glad I'm not the only Taylor fan who didn't know what this phrase meant 😂 I do love that you can see stuff like this in Google Trends data. It's fun to learn together

You could find your way along the Nova Scotia coast blind, just by timing the blinks. Every lighthouse flashes on its own rhythm, a set interval and colour no neighbour repeats. Sambro Island off Halifax has burned since 1758, the oldest working lighthouse in North America. #lighthouse #NovaScotia

The FAA should not use my constituents as guinea pigs for an unproven AI air traffic control system that has Americans’ lives in its hands. I’m calling on the FAA to immediately suspend use of this AI system at Washington area airports until its safety has been established. My full statement:

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

Beyond the #dataviz feed, are there people you follow on Bluesky who are posting about the field regularly? Let Francis know by replying to his thread.

I'll update the starter pack. I'm looking for accounts that are posting dataviz regularly. It is not a who's who, it is not meant to bring followers, it doesn't surface rare posters. Its purpose is to bring dataviz content to its subscribers. Suggestions?

⚡ 68 lightning flashes PER MINUTE. That’s what we measured at the peak of Thursday night’s DC storm — more than 1 per second. Add 60-70 mph winds and blinding rain. We explain why it got so intense — and whether it was a derecho: www.capitalweather.com/how-thursday...

@sarawise.bsky.social, the long-time deputy editor of the #dataviz team, was also impacted. Sara became a mentor to many of us who joined from non-traditional journalism bgs. She's got a sharp eye for editing & always made sure we kept our reader in mind when we were making more experimental charts.

Some sad news: Axios has eliminated their #dataviz team, which means I have a few former colleagues who are going to be looking for work. @daniellealberti.bsky.social was one of the best managers I’ve ever had and her eye for hiring the right people to round out a team is second to none.

Professor Tangrowth would be absolutely stoked. So long as anyone besides Mewtwo finds me first, I’ll be in great shape.

A large number of my colleagues in Netflix games were layed off yesterday. If you know of open roles please let me know, I’d love to connect some great people.

Annnd it was made with an AI prompting tool. Still an interesting concept for a project but stolen art is still stolen even if it's used for a good idea.

New story from @pudding.cool is out, featuring some unique #dataviz forms I immediately added to my inspo bookmarks. The sankey + vocab list combo was especially good

The Pudding@pudding.cool

New project! Two influential word lists made by language researchers define an "essential English vocabulary" for learners: one from 1953 and another from 2023. In this essay, Jasmine Nackash examines the differences between them and what that says about us. link: pudding.cool/2026/07/esse...

Capital Weather@capitalweather.com

DC still ranks as the world's third most polluted city Saturday morning. Wildfire smoke down but not out. Still Code Red levels lingering although there should be gradual improvement this afternoon, w/ Code Orange expected. Late day storms should help disperse smoke. Details at CapitalWeather.com

@erindataviz.bsky.social is back on her #dataviz names streak 👀 TIL I'm ~30 years younger than the average Jacqueline.

Coming out of my cave to share a new blog post: erdavis.com/2026/05/29/w... Still banging on about names. This time, I found the oldest name (as determined by average age of living people with that name) is... Myrtle! Included is a li'l interactive to look at your own name ☺️

We accidentally Pavlov’d our dog to alerting us to when the Mister Softee truck comes through our neighborhood. She got a pup cup one time and it changed her brain chemistry forever. It’s incredible to watch in real time.

This is Edward. He was given 6 months to live after being found as a stray. His family was determined to give him the best few months possible, so they introduced him to the ice cream truck. That was 27 months ago. 14/10 #SeniorPupSaturday (IG: magnificent_foster_dogs)

Very cool #dataviz! Kudos to the developers too - the UX is incredibly smooth.

Wonderful, enraging post by Ana about experiences many of us have had. The only “woman in tech” talk I want to attend at this point is one where a man tells his fellow men to do the bare minimum & be a decent human being. And then follows up by actively calling out the shitty behavior as it happens

Ana Rodrigues@ohhelloana.blog

It's often uneasy for me to share my experiences as a woman in tech, but this job market has me worried for everyone stuck somewhere harmful. I admire everyone who takes on "women in tech" speaking gigs but I am also angry for them and us. ohhelloana.blog/woman-in-tec...

Reminder that if you’re looking for a curated feed for #dataviz, it exists! It’s curated in the sense that I have to add you to a user list (nearly 500 users!) to have your appropriately tagged posts show up. It’s a nice balance between only your followers & the firehose of just the hashtag/topic
