Officially a Staff Software Engineer at Netflix 🎉 …the same title I had 5 years ago at Gatsby. So friendly reminder that titles are made up and inconsistent!

A large number of my colleagues in Netflix games were layed off yesterday. If you know of open roles please let me know, I’d love to connect some great people.

One person getting AI to write quality code when they know how to build what they’re building is doable. Consistently getting AI to do that at scale for a whole bunch of people who don’t know how to build what they want? Totally different problem.

The bar for changing your app icon, even temporarily, needs to be higher. Unless you’re a game! Seasonal launch, etc But for everyone else? Stop it!

3 days in a row of poorly designed experiences for sites that are gating behaviors until a specific point in time (enrollment, sales, etc). THERE ARE SOLUTIONS TO THIS! Use them!

Anytime you worry that the public policy space has no experts to meet this moment in technology do not fret! It’s worse than that. They have Palantir!

I think one of the things about bluesky is that for a lot of its users, it represents a kind of retirement from social media. Like I’m tired and I want to get out of the game

Can’t believe I’m celebrating 5 years at Netflix 🤯 Working here has truly grown me as an engineer in ways I never anticipated. Technical challenge coupled with endless opportunity to identify and solve problems. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been a wild ride, but a rewarding one.

Such a shitty start to the holiday break thanks to @playstation.com support. Charge me for the game? Yup! Give me the game? Nope! Support response? That’ll be one to two business days for us to review your refund. Wtf?!

I know people put a ton of work into this, but I’m sorry, I hate the glass iOS UI/UX so much 😭 I don’t care if my phone looks like it was made in the future. I care that it’s easy to focus my eyes!

I’m convinced, at this point, that about 90% of the things in tech look hard because you aren’t in the details. Once you dig in it’s a permutation of patterns that aren’t too complex. The other 10%, ya, I’m not smart enough for that shit.

My first ever full time developer job was working in the DNS domain. It’s the backbone of the internet so it is both an unbelievable footgun and incredibly resilient to change. Yes, both can be true at once!

I wonder how many utilities won’t be built because of AI. Quick scripts that format data, or automate other mundane tasks that folks won’t bother to write.

The more systems I explore/learn the less time I have to overthink different permutations of their architecture. I have yet to determine if this is a pro or a con!
