Just wrote a blog about why the hard challenge of writing is joyful and we shouldn't let AI do it for us www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mode...

Free (online only view) link to a new paper with @natashaltaylor.bsky.social and @macshine.bsky.social where we show that the bored brain is both more integrated and shows higher neural flexibility - but there can of course be too much of a good thing! rdcu.be/2Ft71e8kXbfa
I'll be one of those authors - unfortunately, the money means very little to either side - Anthropic doesn't care - pay the fine, business as usual. We need better regulations.
A federal judge has approved a US$1.5 billion copyright settlement in which artificial intelligence company Anthropic will pay thousands of authors about US$3,000 per book after using pirated copies of their works to train its Claude chatbot.

1. In an incredible new landmark review, the Health Council of the Netherlands has declared that gender-affirming care for trans youth works, reducing wait times is "morally urgent," and regret is rare. It is the latest of many Euro countries to advance care. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Why are you so boring? (that's the original title for this PT blog) - we showed that when people seem to lack agency, they also seem boring! www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mode...
Had a great chat with the folks @sciencevs.bsky.social about boredom - you can hear it here open.spotify.com/episode/03d7...
What does boredom look like as an embodied experience? Not much it turns out! Although there may well be distinct profiles - just out in Personality and Individual Diffs kwnsfk27.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F...

Talked to Tanya Basu last week about money, boredom, and the search for an interesting life. Highly recommend her latest piece on our work: open.substack.com/pub/boredolo...
I've been asked a lot in the media about raw-dogging boredom - and I just think it's dumb (original title for this @psychologytoday.bsky.social was "Raw-dogging boredom is dumb" - apparently that was offensive!) Here's my take: www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mode...
Starting a new blog @psychologytoday.bsky.social - hope you enjoy it www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mode... This first one has the ever-present psychology myth himself - Mr. Phineas Gage!

Maybe there's some traction to this idea that boredom won't make you creative! Another piece on why raw-dogging boredom is dumb! www.inc.com/jessica-stil...

This chat with @nautil.us is pretty much unedited - and I'm really happy with that. Raw-dogging boredom is just stupid IMHO nautil.us/why-the-do-n...

Really nice clear explanations of why boredom is still a problem in our times and why a one-time "do nothing for 8 hours" isn't going to fix it from @jamesdanckert.bsky.social here: nautil.us/why-the-do-n... (Thanks for the shout out, as always!)

AI and LLMs trend towards sameness of expression - it might just make us all more boring! www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/the-...

The Ford government has a chance to take meaningful action to end homelessness by passing @aislinnclancy.bsky.social and @lfairclough.bsky.social's bill today. I encourage my fellow MPPs to read their powerful op-ed before we vote later today.
"Now is the time for bold action. Hard challenges require us to step away from partisanship and focus on the people we serve." @lfairclough.bsky.social and I wrote about the housing crisis Ontario is in and why we worked across party lines to put forward a bill to end homelessness.
Quite a long - but erudite - journey through boredom here: www.skeptic.com/article/bore...
My awesome PhD student (graduated now) Baaba just got our Pong study up kwnsfk27.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F... We show that when you disrupt agency, frustration ensues and boredom is not far behind!

It's hard to overstate just how far backwards the Ford government has taken us on climate. The rest of the world is using the shift toward renewables to generate jobs and prosperity, meanwhile the Premier has no plan at all.
NEW: "We are continuing to meet our commitment to at least try to meet our commitment for the 2030 target," Environment Minister Todd McCarthy said today. "We believe in achievable outcomes, not unrealistic objectives." #Onpoli globalnews.ca/news/1145911...

Another gem from @minzlicht.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/michaeli... - but I think it goes beyond who gets to be louder. To me, this is about offense - when offended, who needs to change? The offender or the offendee? It's not always clear to me - but maybe I'm the (loud) asshole!
