For 3 weeks I asked my nibling, "What's your voting plan? When/where will you vote? How will you get there? Who with?" Today, "I'll go to the church after school a day I don't have much homework." So, we looked up her (not-church) early & Nov 3 voting options. Check in w/ and help your folks!

My 18-year-old nibling just spent 40 min on the phone with me to verify her voter registration & review her sample ballot. She asked about political parties, who I like and why, and what a constitutional amendment is. Next week, she's going to tell me her voting plan. Who're you helping vote?

Mpls Elections is the most visible beacon of functional gvt. They make it easy to 🗳! They're also a a model of inclusion, good at comms & customer service, train once-a-year staff well, build a pipeline of voters. Gut the team ➡️ undermine trust in elections & gvt. Budgets reveal values.

I should have mentioned that my office is Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services. The Mayor's budget eliminates seven staff members less than two weeks before an anxiety-inducing midterm. No more high school election judge program. No more voter outreach.

I served as a Mpls Election Judge for most elections over 25 yrs. These roles set up us 1-day/year employees to welcome every voter, avoid problems, and follow all of MN's (overly)complicated election law. It's shortsighted to ruin what works & builds trust in gvt. bsky.app/profile/sera...

The supervisor of our Early Vote Center, gone. The supervisor overseeing mail staff, gone. Our lead election judge trainer, gone. Supervisor of logistics staff making sure equipment functions correctly and polling sites have what they need, gone.

Workers constantly dig up and relay brick sidewalks and streets in the Netherlands. Water pipe break? Laying fiberoptic cables? The same team opens and closes the and does the work. This team is smoothing out a street that got uneven after 20 years. "It's normal maintenance, just sand below."

For smaller projects, they relay the bricks they dug up, puzzle style. For larger ones, you see pallets of bricks, pre cut to all the sizes and shapes they'll need for the project.

In the real world, actualizing the right to housing requires that there are enough homes. This might seem self-evident, yet a surprising number of people struggle understanding this.

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

This piece, which fails to even gesture at the possibility that high cost European cities might have a shortage of housing, is inadvertently in object lesson in why the global housing crisis is hitting Europe so hard www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I walked through this tunnel in the bike-friendliest city in Europe, Utrecht. It seems this wide space that hosted an ample sidewalk and reasonable bike lane wasn't big enough for all the cyclists, so they reallocated the street to cyclists and the bike lane to pedestrians.

Many (most?) pre-war multifamily buildings in the Netherlands have two sets of stairs, parallel and interlocking, so residents share stairs with people living in apartments diagonal from their own. Why'd that become the default here?

I wandered into the lobby of this #Zürich building to check it out during the day. It's a media company's office - transparency is on theme.

I've never noticed this #Zürich building during the da, but tonight the wooden beams glowing inside forced me to stop and gape.

This graph is a good reason to introduce my new paper: By Generation and by Design: A Review of the Empirical Rent Control Literature. This paints a (somewhat) misleading picture of rent control evidence because it groups all rent control together regardless of design feature.

John Burn-Murdoch@jburnmurdoch.ft.com

What’s the evidence on rent control? I charted the findings from 112 studies: Great for rent-controlled tenants ✅ But: Pushes up rents for other people ❌ Pushes down new housing construction ❌ Pushes down building quality ❌

I wandered past someone cleaning one of these mostly self-cleaning public toilets in #Zürich. Check out the closet of cleaning supplies integrated on the back of the WC!

Janne K. Flisrand@jannefrommpls.bsky.social

How about the mundane that makes cities humane today? #Zürich has a network of public toilets, findable on a public map, generally self-cleaning. Some cost a Swiss franc, some are open. It's very useful when out and about!

While #Zürich fountains often have dog-friendly designs, this is one is dedicated solely to animals. It reads, "Rudolf Koller Dog Fountain on the 100th anniversary of the death of the Swiss animal painter, January 5, 2005."

I've been wondering about the purpose of these metal strips lining the main train station in #Zürich. Apparently, one bit got bent (damaged) so I now know it's possible to put a wall up around the station.

A new-to-me view of the historically low Limmat River in #Zürich, taken from one of countless stairways that go from walking paths down to the river's edge at nowhere in particular.

Yet another European heat wave is waning, so here's a #Zürich plaza in the summer. It is one of the city's biggest heat islands. This summer, they mounted umbrellas in the pavers to provide some shade.

Thanks for making this easy, Steve Simon. (I explained that your job is making it easy for her to vote, among other things, and that I think you do a very good job of it, so I'm voting for you.)

Some WSJ headline writer is apparently tired of tenants winning, but the reporting is fine: Haddox’s new place didn’t require months of paperwork or administrative bottlenecks. She applied and moved within a week. “This was way easier because the market had gone down.” www.wsj.com/real-estate/...

I watched the work of a crew using a concrete saw to remove a huge poured pilings that had held up the bridge they are now deconstructing. I'm not the only one who appreciates the two replacement bridges, as I had company watching with me.

Janne K. Flisrand@jannefrommpls.bsky.social

There's also a second temporary bridge, this one for pedestrians. It's installed down-river from the (re)construction site rebuilding one of the oldest bridge locations in #Zürich.

Speaking of the European drought, this is the river flowing out of Lake #Zürich, the Limmat. It is feet lower than usual, visible on the white section of this wall, and kindly explained by one of my neighbors.

Janne K. Flisrand@jannefrommpls.bsky.social

The European drought: Lake Zurich (Switzerland) has the lowest level in 75 years, the start of measurement records.

Infrastructure education is a core value in German-speaking Switzerland. This #Zürich example has a temporary sign highlighting six new people-oriented spots in the city, one side with detailed info on where the reader is standing. It includes a game that requires you to go to at least 3.

This is is a second site, the new #Zürich Postterrasse, on the site of a former parking ramp. It connects a big pedestrian street and event area with the Sihl river, located right next to the main train station.

Wandering around #Zürich this weekend, I found two more stations with info about how the city is investing in improving public spaces. One is an old street-to-square project, one is a future remove-cars-from-the-main-train-station-perimeter project.

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

Adam Bonin@adambonin.bsky.social

Incredibly disappointing ad from Mary Peltola (D-AK) saying she neither supports "kids getting surgeries to change genders or men in girls bathrooms." Yes, flipping the Senate is essential and can stop bad laws and bad judges from happening, but she can do it without my support from the lower 48.

The well-designed and run #Zürich HB train station is the best. It flows seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhoods, avoids annoying rider bottlenecks, is bike accessible w/parking, and has a river running through it. It's the heart of the city, the place to meet up. Or to catch a train.

I have a two-step plan for Minneapolis to activate parks. First, allow more dense housing around the perimeter of the park - taller, smaller setbacks, family-unit sized homes. Second, fund the Parks well enough that they can fund programming.

Stevenson: activating parks. I live across from a park but it's almost always empty. How do we use planning design to activate these beautiful places?
