When I talk about how the risk modelling that underpins insurance (among other things) is socially constructed and directly influenced by the corporate interests of insurers, this is what I mean. It's not a conspiracy undermining the science of risk; it's just business-as-usual.

Here we have two anonymous whistleblows—a report from (re)insurance executives and an op-ed from an insurance risk modeller—both sounding the alarm about the ways that corporate interest are applying pressure on how climate risks are modelled and priced. • www.insidetrack.org.uk/releases/ins... •

theguardian.comI work for a major insurer. Much of my industry is fudging the numbers in the face of the climate crisis | AnonymousInsurers are taking on more risk than they should. If – or when – a major disaster hits, the catastrophe will have far-reaching consequences, says an anonymous modeller and whistleblower

We should not be shocked that science and technology have political economy. We should stop pretending otherwise. The stuff of insurance — especially in the face of catastrophic risk and climate change — is far too important to be left to the insurance industry

Tressie really nails deep truths here about the agentic subjectivity that these companies and engineers assume people either already have or will readily reorient their lives around – assuming again they even could do so, which speaks to the view that life is just a spreadsheet of structured tasks.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

Most people’s work lives are not that structured. And almost no normal person’s personal life can be that structured. The “gee whiz” of it all cant manufacture the market it needs.

In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.

As an academic I feel like that I'm living in that scene in The Big Short where they see all the empty houses and know it's a bubble, but for me it's hearing about all the innovation and growth in higher education, then teaching a class where only 8/250 students show up weekly

I wish it were just a me problem, but academics now brag about having 30% attendance rates and bumping it up to 50% when there's an in-class quiz. A colleague had to teach to an *empty* room b/c nobody showed up but the seminar was being recorded for future classes.

Shit is dire. All the universities are investing in AI, while pumping up their growth numbers, but on the ground, in the classrooms, all the McMansions in Florida are empty.
