One of my favorite and most effective design patterns is "tell the player exactly what you're gonna do to them, then do it." You can be SIGNIFICANTLY meaner to the player if you simply tell them ahead of time that that's exactly what you'll be doing, and also the suspense of the warning is a delight

As someone who's barely ever messed with Python: I can't decide if I think Python's relationship with whitespace/tabs/indentation is genius or insane

suspense is a lot about the player’s mental model and uncertainty / expectations within that model. but your players don’t come to your game with a blank slate! all these things affect the mental model even beside your gameplay

Kill the puritan in your heart that pipes up with its shrill little voice every time you see something that you find off putting. Ppl publicly sneering at sex in art – including porn & kink – may as well just carry water for Mastercard, PayPal, and the conservative animus rn. I don't respect it

Lots of excitement about the squeaky beach sounds in Big Walk! You'll all be happy to know it's the real thing! Was absolutely giddy to get to record them on an actual Australian squeaky beach in Wilson's Promontory. Yes, if you didn't know some beaches there really do squeak. It is pure joy.

modern fps devs spend SO MUCH time trying to figure out how to keep their 'main queues' full and deleting game modes for it but like. I guarantee you if they allowed player hosted servers there would be a "24/7 rush mode" lobby that was only half full all day & everyone would be satisfied with that

I get a little sad when I think about learning "all the animals" because I don't want to think there's none left they'll make new Pokemon in my lifetime. they probably won't make new mammals

Just imagined how 2016 me would've programmed something I just programmed... Guarantee it would've been a pile of Unity prefabs in a scene together, instead of anything remotely flexible

OK I can't believe I almost slept on Rhythm Heaven Groove's multiplayer games.... some of their best stuff is in here

gamefeel stuff really is all in the details sometimes and knowing what you're trying to make so you can seek it out when things are close is such a valuable skill

one of the weirdest things about working on games is how quickly something can turn from "this feels awful and unplayable" to "this feels great and polished" in the span of like a week with highly targeted adjustments and no major redos at all

Seeing vague and conflicting results out there, this is a hail mary: Has anyone gotten hot reloading working with C# Godot and VS Code? Can you tell me what you did?

This concept was introduced to me as "run the dishwasher twice" and was an important part of my executive functioning recovery as well as my path to self-acceptance.

mucho texto i know but i wanted to write a lil thing about how u can treat yourself nice!!

Cobalt Core had a ton of handy cheats and debug buttons (nice work Ben!!!), but my favorite was the ability to instantly load into any fight and give myself any card/artifact This let me repro bugs within seconds of hearing about 'em, it saved SO much time
