I'm begging everyone to please become a prison abolitionist and a luddite and to heal and decolonize yourself and find the love and compassion in your heart that they want turned into fear and hate for your fellow beings. Do this before it's too late for all of us. Here, I made it so easy for you:

I’m not scared of AI, I’m scared of the power that idolizing “AI” has given oligarchs. Financially, socially, politically, environmentally, we're handing over our systems to do whatever they want. Read The Reverse Centaur’s Guide To Life After AI by @doctorow.pluralistic.net #booksky #nonfiction

“The key point: The political Right has always derided anything that threatens the social & racial hierarchy as a form of anti-American ‘socialism’ or ‘communism’ & used those terms to demonize anyone who dares to question the righteousness of past, present, or future white reactionary elite rule.”
I wrote about the foundational belief on the Right - that equality is an “un-American” evil. This piece is free to read. But recently, only paywalled pieces have generated new memberships and thereby revenue. I am hoping we can buck the trend so that I can keep publishing free essays regularly.

I will point out, however, that serious scientists are cautious with their claims. Furthermore, as we wrote in 2021 (in "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?🦜"), p.616: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... >>

“When we think these systems capture something deep about ourselves & our thinking, we induce distorted & impoverished images of ourselves & our cognition.” —@irisvanrooji.bsky.social AGI isn’t a beautiful dream. It’s an insult…and a threat. A perversion of what it means to be human.

I lack the ancient incantations to hand over the servers to the raccoons today, but the sentiment is a wonderful reminder: true flourishing (sustainment) isn't about running the machinery faster—it's about knowing when to let the moss take it back.
Don't work harder or smarter. Work darker. Use your knowledge of ancient magic to call upon the old gods. Turn all CEOs into newts & ferns. Cover all data centers in moss & wildflowers and let the raccoons have them. You deserve a rest.

This is why I have now embraced my unadulterated, cringe-worthy, faith and belief in the truly unique ability of humans to be humans and to express their humanity in art and self-reflection. And I include all humanities disciplines in the “self-reflection” part.
My whole career the Humanities seem to have been curled up in a defensive crouch trying to justify our meaning/existence. At times it has even seemed a productive thought exercise, but I think generally whatever body has demanded the justification is not really open to being persuaded of anything.

I don’t normally write about what ails me because I can’t imagine anything more boring for you to read. But I decided to tell you something about my health today that I’ve never before revealed because I want to help dispel some of the stigma attached to a condition I’ve had.

"Why should my tax dollars go to giving houses to people who can't afford them?" Why should MY tax dollars should go to satisfying your desire to see desperate people living desperate lives? I'd rather save money and solve the problem, rather than spend money to exacerbate it.
