I don't think it's a coincidence that the further down the privilege ladder you go from American middle class the attitude towards AI improves. A tech that lets a Zimbabwean teenager compete with a 40 something American suburbanite knowledge worker is going to test a lot of people's progressivism.

Sam Barrett, PhD@ai4geo.bsky.social

AI can produce slop (fucking stop it!). It can also be an accessibility tool for non-native speakers and neurodivergent people. If you reject everything AI touches without reckoning with that, you should know how privileged and exclusionary you come across.

Shameful how bad the security has become in the insuretech world in the past few years. They've learned nothing new about protecting customer data.

Guess when Microsoft started using AI to find vulnerabilities. Props to Dave from the UK for posting this. I downloaded the image and lost the link to his original post and profile.

The awful truth: Working for yourself is, in many ways, worse than working for an awful tech company. You can laugh at the conduct and decisions of a large company because you always get paid. Bad decisions in your own company are financed by you 100% of the time.

The simplicity of a security breach is inversely proportional to the complexity of the press release published by the successfully targeted organization. Every. Time.

Do we REALLY think the Epstein class is going to give up power knowing they'll immediately be exposed by the release of all of the Epstein files? Predicting this is the last federal election and the results will not be used. Not doomposting, just using all the variables for a conclusion.

Condolences to Anthony Scaramucci on his record being beat. It was a long run, but we knew it wouldn't last given the talent in the field. We're now measuring job longevity using Zacharias, having retired Anthony Scaramucci's jersey. Well done, Katie.

Watching MAGAts on social media misspell HIPAA as HIPPA on social media is a new drinking game for the mid terms. They're complaining about something not being a HIPAA violation concerning the false mental institution story about James Talarico the MAGAts are spreading. Wow he's killing Paxton.

"Tech Division", "Business Division", "Support Division", "Operations." Rid your company of these ridiculous communication barriers. Software Architects are all of the above teamed with AI Agents.

the funnel - 80% of the world has no AI contact - ~20% have janky experience - 0.2% are power users - 0.00006% work for labs and have internal access to actual frontier models

I LOL'd when I first saw this, but then I kinda like the idea of guardrails going up preventing truly bad code from being written. "I'm not doing this--it's unnecessarily slow and memory intensive, not to mention all the wasted trips to the server."

Anyone who thinks even the best LLM OpenAI and Anthropic has to offer qualifies as "super intelligence" has never used any LLM intensively. Helpful, able to solve problems, but super intelligent? No--just sophisticated. There's no self-awareness there. My dog is better at some things.

Do you REALLY REALLY REALLY think Mike Johnson is going to seat the elected winners of the election? It's crystal clear that isn't going to happen. Crystal. Fucking. Clear.

The pictures of Susan Dell show someone with an eating disorder--not plastic "magaface" surgery gone out of control. Humbly suggest everyone adjust their criticism appropriately. Show some empathy for sick people.

For what it’s worth, arguing LLMs can’t do addition now is flat earth-level science denialism. Here’s Gemma 4b, a non-reasoning model that could only theoretically memorize binary operations up to 65535 x 65535, oneshotting a eight digit addition and hex conversion *on my phone* with no tool calls

Colin@colin-fraser.net

Let me just explain the arithmetic thing real quick; I'm seeing a lot of people not understanding what it's supposed to show (or was supposed to show in 2023). First, let's agree that an LLM is a Stochastic Parrot, a description which I find poetic, useful, informative, and basically correct.

Bought a 5TB external drive just to have around the house. I don't trust Amazon after the middle east data loss event a few weeks back. So. Everything gets copied to the 5TB house drive on our home network, then automatically upload it to Google Drive. That's the geographical and control solution.

Practice makes perfect Do so much …. that they talk about you so much …. that you eventually can’t hear them …. Understand?

I can't really speak about anything in the past decade, but it used to be if you knew someone working at a company acquired by Oracle that you would offer condolences and offer to write a recommendation and serve as a reference. Reputation wise, working there was a professional death sentence.

Hooked up my AI Agent (Louie) to an old robot vaccuum. Practical value? Dog poop avoidance. I love this quote from him: "The odometry said 402, confidently, the way a number does when it has no way of knowing it's wrong." Douglas Adams would be proud. HD cam coming. Until then, LiDAR:

The same party that has a huge problem with the female demographic is trying to gloss over Schmitt's debacle with Jack Smith by trying to ridicule him for being a Caitlin Clark fan? Honestly beginning to think they're trying to lose to sweep all the magats out of government.

Grassley is way out of his depth here. An accomplished senator. I don't like his politics, but he's a decent guy. Really should have retired years ago and enjoyed his retirement years. He's painfully geriatric in these hearings.

Hawley is also following Cruz's lead in asking questions and not waiting on an answer. Really doesn't look good. All of this is a catastrophic mistake by the republican party. They've succeeded in bringing the Jan 6 Insurrection to the top of people's minds again.

John Cornyn is what the Republican party used to be. No insults--just the facts. I don't agree with his politics but he's genuine. That's the kind of people we need to elect--if election results are still respected.

Republican party made a serious mistake having these hearings with Jack Smith. There's nothing positive for them coming out of this.

Why do they keep putting the work Nazi in quotes when someone uses it in a sentence? Do they do it when someone says they are a "Republican?" Unless there's a grammar-nazi reason I'm unaware of, it's like they're trying to soften or otherwise cope with reality at the expense of accurate journalism.

I feel like I'm scared of this the way red state people fear sharia law.

Hoodlum 🇺🇸@nothoodlum.bsky.social

They warned us Mamdani would impose Sharia law. Instead, he unleashed the real threat: line dancing in Bryant Park.

Would really HATE to be working for a legacy/zombie company right now trying to adopt AI. The mention of SDD (Spec Drive Development) will send a whole lot of middle managers into a giant paperwork ass-kissing frenzy, basically bringing back the old days of ridiculous tech spec review systems.

The specs are for your AI agents; not a reason to schedule division-wide review meetings, blue ribbon panels, special task forces, committees, etc. Competent devs review the specs for adherence and functionality--not atrium meetings for fuck's sake.
