I don't think it's a coincidence that the further down the privilege ladder you go from American middle class the attitude towards AI improves. A tech that lets a Zimbabwean teenager compete with a 40 something American suburbanite knowledge worker is going to test a lot of people's progressivism.
AI can produce slop (fucking stop it!). It can also be an accessibility tool for non-native speakers and neurodivergent people. If you reject everything AI touches without reckoning with that, you should know how privileged and exclusionary you come across.
Remember the early days of Covid when people were speculating on N95 masks and hand sanitizer by buying up the scarce supply and selling it for inflated prices; but then we made so many masks and so much hand sanitizer that you could get them super cheap?
We could do that for housing if we wanted.
Today, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language.
It is difficult to overstate the importance of a figure like Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s great national poet, to the Ukrainian language, literature, and indeed to Ukrainian identity and statehood as a whole.
Anthropic is thus bidding for a major share of imperial power. And as far as I can tell they are on track to get it - there were some hiccups along the way but even the Trump administration “now trusts Anthropic”.'

'[...] When I was there, Anthropic’s policy arm explicitly aimed to be the most trusted advisor to the US government, i.e. the de-facto Department of AI, and thus influence the US domestic and geopolitical strategy, whether we go to war with China, etc.

Putin has either ultimately lost his fucking mind by now, or he's just openly mocking everyone and amusing himself, reveling in the all-encompassing idiocy of the Donald Trump era.
Most likely, it's both at the same time.
It wasn't just being hyper critical about policies or potential scandals. That's to be expected. It was the constant poring through every speech or statement for the “oh so you think you're better than me?” angle.
Since this keeps getting liked, one clarification: disdaining purity politics doesn’t mean giving up on Getting It Right. But achieving liberation in a changing society is always a process. Our opponent‘s tactics and tools have changed and so our demands (of ourselves and others) must change too.
anyway, 1000% agreed; the lesson from early free software is not "give up" or "practice purity politics", it is "we needed to bootstrap emacs and gcc on Solaris and DEC Unix and we're going to have to bootstrap the new openness with other tools too, but we'll get there if we work at it".
A record-breaking repo auction today in Russia, with the central bank pumping 6.5 trillion rubles into the banking system for 8 days. The liquidity deficit of the banking system improved a tiny bit after this huge repo dump.
Haiku is garbage. Even Sonnet is meh. A better example would be OpenAI because they actually figured out they have to do this first and then tried to not half ass it. They literally cannibalized their Astra offering and now Sol.
If you are still on the “cheap Chinese models will take share from US labs” cope train you need to get off. US labs are now distilling their own models to compete across the Pareto frontier, so Haiku is better model than Kimi at 1/8th the cost. The only reason to use it is if you MUST self-host.

Lot of folks (self included) expressing despair that despite aggressive prosecuting fascists ("doing everything right") Brazil was still going to get Bolsonaro-ed and the fact this guy gtfo-ed as quickly as he did should be a big signal for the AOC DOJ to go *hard* in 2029.
Funny how having an inherent respect for human behavior can protect you from this. Not that I agree with all human behavior but that I think it generally has a point to it and "the whole world is stupider than me" is a bad distortion on analysis
smoked
haters got absolutely smoked on the facts because the entire movement against AI power is built on fruit of a poisoned tree
opposing the growing and dangerous power of AI (and its purveyors) requires reckoning with the reality of how it works, not plugging your ears pretending it doesn't
Anthropic's S-1 shows an 85% gross margin in H1 from running its models, a reality check for skeptics who said pay-as-you-go model sales wouldn't be profitable (Stephanie Palazzolo/The Information)

i know comparing everyone to christian fundamentalists is a bit passé, but some people truly do believe in binary "you are good or evil" and any drop of "evil" is total and contaminates your soul, even retroactively
like "tarnish everything he ever accomplished".. dude phoned it in on a sticker
This chart is insane. This shows Russia's casualties over time compared to Russia's territorial gains in Ukraine over the last five years.
No sane or rational person would say continuing the war to try and take more of Ukraine's territory is worth the casualties.
for the unfamiliar: that is a live dashboard that charted the reinforcement learning logs of a Xiaomi model that, for whatever you think of the "Pareto frontier", leads it in its category
The only competitive Chinese model is GLM because they are focusing on RL rather than distillation in order to develop powerful cyber capabilities and as a result they might get, like, literally sanctioned if they release an open source cyber weapon so idk how long that continues
Mistral weights should drop today, or by the 31st or later. Anyway, excited to see if RL got the model from usable and good enough to sorta worth the money.
🥴 Putin told the leaders of Finland and Norway that Russia will not give up on seizing the entire Donbas, — Reuters reported, citing a source close to the Kremlin.
HoE has a video on it, and it's both hilarious, and also Sweden is fucknig terrifying and the USSR knew it and backed off. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucDZ...
OTD in 1981 “whisky on the rocks”. Soviet submarine S-363 ran aground after “navigational error” in Sweden.
My navy converts ships to submarines and submarines to ships. My trolls are not snowflakes about this.
I think BBC should be literally burned to the ground together with NYT and earth should be salted and poisoned where their HQs stood so nothing will ever be built on that cursed land
I think it doesn't reflect well on the BBC that one its leading presenters is allowed to write an 'analysis' for a highly partisan newspaper which includes lines like "Racial minorities, worshipped by white Democrats" www.dailymail.com/news/article...

Berlin PD violently raids a Black, Indigenous, and POC health clinic's weekly transfem-only meet-up called "The Dolls", and seize medications, money, etc.
Stand with The Dolls.
they're all on xitter and deep frying their brains with "the perfidious jew invented evil gender ideology to groom your kids through steven universe and make the white man a servant to israel" slop
so insular they don't even realize how associating these two things looks to people on the outside
Yes the Cenk Uygur ad is antisemitic, yes it is transphobic, but it’s the *interaction effect* between the antisemitism and the transphobia that causes it to give off so many Hitler particles
It only took them 4 years and 8 months. A UN Commission of Inquiry says Russia’s systematic attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, concluding they were intended to deprive civilians of essential services and cause suffering. #Ukraine
If you’ve never watched Babylon 5, Koenig’s Alfred Bester is a bright, helpful, clever, friendly troubleshooter who always listens, follows the rules, and knows in his heart he’s doing the right thing.
In other words, he’s one of the most frightening and implacable villains in any sci-fi show.
google: "we have made the only LLM that can design a distributed system without vomiting. also, it cannot write sql. this follows our previous llm, which was too neurotic to write code at all and acted like it was afraid of being beaten."
what happens here is the opposite of the mass vibe-slinging that openai & friends are doing

I've been observing the TauCeti project, an agent-friendly math repository.
Apart from rate of growth, the review and coordination machinery are quite interesting
marine corps boards crossing out their instructions "expel trans marines" and writing in "we keep this trans marine" is, frankly, a great example of what it means that a society is more than just its government
My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.
That is no surprise because the Student Ticket was pretty open from the start that they are the same as Vučić's party, only with a different cadre of vatniks. Why is everyone acting all surprised?
firefighting. In a tube. Also Ukraine had a whole bunch of underground rail lines for rapid movement and stuff, and all sorts of cool stuff for this operation. It wasn't just "go in hole and good luck" like earlier Russian attempts, this was extremely impressive stuff.
During Operation Veles near Kupiansk, Ukraine's Khartiia Corps captured more than 30 Russian troops who had been operating from a gas pipeline. One group was cut off from the main Russian force, and after prolonged fighting, part of it surrendered. #Ukraine
Anthropic cumulative operating loss since inception is only $12 billion and at their current run rate operating margin they will completely recoup that loss by Q1 27 even if revenue is flat. So much for “these companies will never make money” lmao
