truly a wild time to be alive when the cryptography world is split between those worried about quantum computers and those whose private key is “4”

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

It’s called “the pathetic fallacy” because Anthropic sounds like pathetic suckers for making these claims. They are literally being hoisted on their own simulacrum of a petard

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

Ossoff: "If John Lewis were marching today from Selma to Montgomery, Mike Collins would be grabbing a billy club"

It’s walking distance from the pentagon in one direction and from a joint Army/Marine base in the other, but sure, we need a sniper ammunition storage arch right in front of Arlington National Cemetery.

I think this is a very beautiful idea. Shana tova, everyone.

The sense of possibility inherent to Rosh Hashanah, that we have the power to change our world, can sustain us as we face the horrors and recommit ourselves to the task of building a world of justice for all.

Even if you subscribe and use an ad blocker, the constant popups nagging you to use the app and create linked subscriptions for family members make the website a miserable experience. I guess they want to be a daily puzzle games site? Because they certainly don't want anyone reading their articles.

BIG DEAL on voting rights this morning: Governor Spanberger just restored the voting rights of some 60,000+ Virginians. Her move reverses Youngkin's abrupt decision in 2023 to end automatic voting rights restoration, which brought Virginia back to a system of default lifetime disenfranchisement.

boltsmag.orgVirginia Governor Restores Voting Rights for Thousands With Past Felony Convictions - BoltsThis is the only state that, absent action by the governor, bans people convicted of any felony from voting for life. Virginians have an opportunity to end that system for good in November.

Hannity: "My President, Lindsey probably has a heavenly version of Mar-a-Lago. It may even be a little bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if he added one big beautiful ballroom and an arch somewhere on the property. Because he would want to obviously duplicate his dearest friend in life. You."

Trump extends National Guard Deployment in DC to Jan. 20, 2029, "or until terminated by the President." Unclear if this includes ALL 5,150 troops, including those from multiple states deployed for "Freedom 250" who (for some reason) are slated to stay through August. cbs4local.com/news/nation-...

Seems the real problem centrist democrats are facing right now is the people are being very clear that they want leaders who will solve their biggest problems, and centrist democrats really don't want to solve their biggest problems and hate the people for wanting that. It's a real pickle for them.

the entire conservative media apparatus was born out of a conviction that what happened to Nixon should never again happen to a Republican president and it worked and they now feel comfortable enough to admit it

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "I think Nixon's historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, and deservedly so. I joked that if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12 hours news story. The idea that it took down a presidency is crazy."

Having spent the weekend in DC, let me assure you that no matter how much you think you hate what he’s done to our capital, you should hate it more. Giant banners of his mugshot, tacky gold paint on the statues, a fucking UFC cage on the White House lawn and armed troops everywhere. (spits)

exactly the right response

There’s been a lot of talk in this race about what makes a "real man." A man does what’s right when no one is watching. He upholds his commitments to his family and neighbors. He doesn’t lie, cheat, & steal his way through life. Real men serve others. Weak men serve themselves.

I am absolutely shocked that the person who wrote this is over 25. "The Department of Homeland Security" sounded like a bad joke when it was proposed, like someone had taken the wrong lesson from 1984 or V for Vendetta.

NPR@npr.org

DHS was originally conceived in the interest of unity and harmony — and the phrase "homeland security" was originally meant to be reassuring. n.pr/4nOx8KP

I guess when you meet a member of the "professional class," you're supposed to tell them a story about when you drank a Miller Lite, and that will cause them to melt like the Wicked Witch of the West in a rainstorm?

The number of Republicans crashing out about getting nakedly gerrymandered is, unironically, a sign that we need to do more of it. You guys are correct! This shit sucks! Welcome to the party, pals! We can all stop doing it any time you like!

The fact that an artificial bipedal chassis made it 13 miles is the impressive part. It almost feels like a foregone conclusion that once the mechanics of humanoid movement can be mimicked, the robotic version can be made faster than any meat sack. It's also not competing with humans. Weird framing
