At that moment the radio was playing the brand-new "Charlie Brown" by the Coasters. I knew about Charlie Brown from the newspaper comic and was surprised to learn that he smoked.

I think we underestimate the appeal of antigambling politics because every problem gambler is surrounded by 3-10 people who are absolutely sick of their shit.

Keef Slertner is one of my favorite comedic archetypes: the pure altruist who inexplicably thinks all of his efforts as devious schemes.

So, this is still going on. If you can evade being caught on-the-scene, it is perfectly legal in New York City to ram someone with a car. The police will treat you, the victim, like you're a pain in the ass.

A pedestrian who was nearly killed by a hit-and-run driver in Midtown this summer only learned later — after weeks of silence — that the NYPD had closed the 'open-and-shut case' without finding the perpetrator. buff.ly/Otq7uXf

It’s good that cheesecake factory is decorated like an occult temple to an eldritch deity. Any restaurant can feed you cheesecake, only Cheesecake Factory makes it feel like part of a ritual

“Good intentions lead to bad results when you’re delusionally incompetent,” while never nearly as sharp a diagnosis of the U.S. left as the U.S. right likes to think, was at least accurate enough to give sincere swing voters some pause. That era is over.

"I was a dumbass for X, Y, Z reasons. Material reality made me see the error of my ways" is actually incredibly uplifting stuff, especially from a 25 year old with a blue collar job and a HS diploma. He was a teenager during Trump 1

Hitler's Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) deliberately destroyed today. Part of me likes history being preserved, but another part of me doesn't give a shit, it was a monument to one of history's most evil men. Thoughts?

They should do something special when you get a hand in poker that's all red cards or all black cards but isn't a flush. Like give you a fancy little paper crown. Or maybe the pit boss could pull out a pistol and fire it into the ceiling

on some idiotic homo economicus level I kind of timed this perfectly: I never noticed this at the time because I was myself a smoker, and then Bloomberg brought the hammer down while giving me two free months of nicotine patches and I quit, and by the time I would’ve started noticing, it was gone

I think being involved in tabletop games helps me be a bit of an optimist, because the general level of design of strategy, party, role-playing, and simulation tabletop games has improved in the last 50 years in a way that is legibly discrete but mostly not about technology qua technology.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Previously I have posted about a Nintendo of Europe downloadable premium animated wallpaper that featured a bizarre Toad eating the wallpaper. The files have finally been datamined, allowing the Wallpaper-Eating Toad to be observed in never-before-seen maximum quality.

I suppose I'm lucky, in that I use LLMs mostly to scaffold over or around blatant defects in our department infrastructure after I've politely asked the ostensibly responsible person to fix it multiple times. Which, at least, puts the people who would most like to complain in a tricky position.

To me the right reaction to being told "I don't want to try it because it was made with AI" is not self-righteous indignation. The right reaction is to keep on working until it is undeniably the best and most useful thing it can be, out-competing alternatives by a mile.

It was an odd moment for me, realizing that at least by @atwilliams.bsky.social ’s contentious but compelling standards, “IF THE ZOO BANS ME FOR HOLLERING AT THE ANIMALS I WILL FACE GOD AND WALK BACKWARDS INTO HELL.” is closer to pre-modern poetry than modern poetry is.

listening to Odelay for the hundredth time this week, walking to work, just passed this, and realized 1) I did not realize he is on tour and 2) I would not take a front-row ticket if you gave it to me, not because I have anything against him, but because it would just make me depressed

I've mentioned this before, but I adore this period in the 1800s when you could just say whatever you wanted about color. No one knows how it works or why, so anything goes. If you've got a wild theory and some illustrated plates, you're good to go!

The Public Domain Review@publicdomainrev.bsky.social

Colour plates from Edwin D. Babbitt’s Principles of Light and Color (1878). Babbit’s 600-page tome begins as a somewhat sober primer on color theory but goes on to explore the idea that our physical and psychic ills can be cured via “chromotherapy”: publicdomainreview.org/collection/p...

This reminds me that it’s a shame you can’t volunteer for door-to-door “Depress The Vote” efforts, something I am temperamentally much more suited to. Just knocking on doors on Staten Island and holding out two pills: one black, the other a grill-shaped Gummi.
