#Seattle (0.08") is about to finish October drier than Las #Vegas (1.19") for just the 2nd time (1972). But Vegas isn't the only unexpected "L" Seattle is on track for in the October rain loss column this year --> emeraldcityweather.com/seattle-less... #wawx #nvwx

I want to know the thing in your household that has absurdly outlived its intended lifetime. Like these McDonald’s promotional plates from 1997 (!!!) that are still in rotation at my parents’ house. Or my Limited Too pajama pants from 6th grade that I, uh, still wear.

Herman Melville has revised Chapter 32 to ensure an accurate description of the Sperm Whale’s popcorn chamber.

WHALEFALL was one of the worst books I've read and I will not be seeing the movie but I do kinda want the $50, 65oz whale popcorn bucket

I've been up since 3am with a teething baby, and maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but I've become obsessed with the Cronenbergian horror that must be having a tooth burst out of your gums when you've never had teeth before

I wrote about this possibility at the start of the season 😬https://heatmap.news/climate/el-nino-california-hurricane

heatmap.newsCalifornians: Brace Yourselves for a Hurricane This SummerAn active Pacific cyclone season plus El Niño-warmed waters could produce a first-of-its-kind West Coast storm.

The NOAA National Hurricane Center has just issued a Tropical Storm Watch part coastal Southern California, including city/county of San Diego. This is only second time such a product has ever been issued for any part of California (TS Hilary in 2023 was other instance). #CAwx

My grandma’s memory isn’t what it used to be but this afternoon while having lunch she just started telling me about when she lived on the ranch in California and Okies would come to their door asking for food

We had Chris Wright, Al Gore, Mikie Sherrill, Chris Hayes, Mike Levin, and Tom Steyer at Heatmap House today but, most importantly, we also had a lactation room 🙌

Being back in New York after a year away is so disorienting; I feel so clumsy. I keep forgetting which staircase to use at which stop, and I'm gaping at everything like a tourist because I'm like, "Was that Knicks sign there before? What's with this new subway ad?"

All I've ever wanted to be is a photogenic young woman coming to grips with raw nature!!! RIP Annie Dillard, one of the best to ever do it. "Our planet alone has death."

I've written down a million of her quotes, but another favorite: "Some higher animals have emotions that we think are similar to ours: dogs, elephants, otters, and the sea mammals mourn their dead. Why do that to an otter? What creator could be so cruel, not to kill otters, but to let them care?"

this always depends on the type of flat, but you can now get a $20 USB-C charged air compressor that works for bikes/cars/etc. You just set your preferred PSI and it takes 2 minutes. Technology!

The fire alarm in our building went off twice last night and we had to do a full evacuation both times. I’ve had an apartment fire before so #1, scarred. But #2, our scramble to grab stuff and get out at 2am reminds me it’s a good idea to keep a go-bag ready for *any* potential disaster…

Also this weekend I had a flat tire and no spare and my brother was like “oh no biggie” and grabbed a fully charged tire reinflator from his trunk, where it was kept beside two giant canisters of water, a battery and jump kit, cat litter, and a bunch of candy bars

Reading about the 2025 PISA scores and it's wildly depressing that AI has clearly been more damaging to students' reading scores than *literally not being in classrooms* because of the pandemic.
