My first job. When people want to know what I’ve worked on, this is the credit that makes them smile. This is the credit my friends from high school text me to tell me they have been watching with their daughters. Eternally grateful to Amy and Dan for giving me my first job and teaching me so much.

‘Gilmore Girls’ premiered 26 years ago today.

My Star Trek Day confession: Original Series is big meh. (Love the TOS movies tho.)

Happy Star Trek Day. And now, my confession: Except for Janeway and Seven, I absolutely loathed every single crew member on Voyager. An entire bridge composed of nails on a chalkboard

The last 10 years of American politics have really played havoc with what the stakes can be in action and espionage shows. Like, exposure of misdeeds or corruption? That’s below the fold in the Times every day now.

new reacher season plays with the delightful fantasy that, if someone were to expose america torturing civilians in a foreign nation at the behest of a dictator, the american media and citizens would give a shit

yeah man "woke 1" sucked ass. I "woke 1" morning from uneasy dreams to find myself transformed into a giant insect

When I get a text from someone I haven’t talked to since high school, it can only mean one thing: they’re watching Gilmore Girls with their teenage daughter and hit my episode. And the residuals, to this day, pay my cell phone bill.

‘Gilmore Girls’ has left Netflix US.

I’ve never understood this dig. I sign the front of a check when I pay a bill. I sign the back of the check when I endorse a deposit. Everyone in the world does this. What am I missing?

If the actor with British accent is evil then you’re watching Sci fi. If the actor with a British accent is good then it’s Fantasy. If the actor with a British accent knocks something over then it’s a Rom com.

American Cinematheque screening announcement email arrives while you are looking at inbox Click. Waitroom. 100 ahead of you. Never seen a wait room on AC that small. Yay. RSVP? Click. Sold out. All under 30 seconds. How.

The Beyond Fest email, which I subscribe to but do not have inbox notifications prioritized like I do with AC, went out a minute earlier. So everyone who clicked on that got the tickets I GUESS

My Star Trek suggestions: - turn on the lights - less action - fewer to no big bads - never say the names “kirk” “spock” or “picard” ever again - stop saving earth - no one is special because of their parents or “destiny” - no borg again ever - mystery / crisis of the week - character relationships

Anyway, my opinion about Star Trek, which is Good and Correct, is that two things have gone wrong: it is best served by 22 episode seasons, which streaming has killed, and also it is a franchise that needs you to inhabit the worldview of a Centre-Left Army Guy that few in modern US TV do.

My top 10 films of 2025 First, honorable mentions: THE ICE TOWER THE SOUND OF FALLING THE UGLY STEPSISTER LURKER

It's Oscars weekend! Which means it's time to drop my top 10 films of 2025, something I only do after seeing every movie nominated in every category (forgive me, I'm ill). This year I saw 108 features released in 2025. These were my faves. If I left off your fave, choose to believe it was #11.

2. NOUVELLE VAGUE An absolute confection. The most pleasurable movie of 2025. Beyond the uncanny recreations of 1959 Paris or the mostly naive cast’s stellar performances, I can’t say what the film is about other than the pleasure of living itself and making something beautiful.

1. IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT Secret Agent really stole its wind. How can this story be so funny? How did they manage to shoot it on the streets of Tehran? Every moment, every choice, rings true, and I don’t think another filmmaker alive could pull off something like this.

3. SIRÂT I’ve never been as rewarded going into a movie knowing absolutely nothing about it as I was by SIRÂT. Stunning and loud in every way — it is So Much Movie.

6. MARTY SUPREME I flew to Vienna last year just to see three operas and I don’t need to hear another TAKE. Gwyneth deserved more attention for what she delivers here.

7. MAGELLAN Did you think a 2025 biopic about the first man to (nearly) circumnavigate the world would be moody, existential, and engage with colonialism? Shocked this movie was this good.

How can they “shut down” Global Entry? It’s a kiosk. No one runs it. You stand in front of it then hand the printout to the border & customs guy who is also handling everyone else.
