October 27, 1962, was arguably the most dangerous day of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a day when human error, rushed preparations, aggressive tactics, and sky-high tensions could have set off World War III intentionally or by accident at least four separate times. Here’s what happened (a long thread):

the ADL is more mad about Zohran calling a neighborhood Eastern European than Elon giving a Nazi salute Zohran derangement syndrome is real

Barack Obama just endorsed Angie Nixon for U.S. Senate! She may not have the full backing of the Democratic establishment, but she’s building support from the biggest names in the party. LFG! 🔥

Holy cow! This is stunning even for Trump. He is working hand-in-glove with Russian oligarchs and trying to hide their involvement in this already reprehensible oil exploration project.

Scott Horton@robertscotthorton.bsky.social

"The venture was launched with the involvement of Gentry Beach, an investor with ties to Donald Trump’s family." Beach is a longtime friend of TrumpJr and was a guest at his recent island wedding financed by Russian mobster Umar Kremlëv at which at last ten Russian intel agents were present.

Tonight in 1962, President John F. Kennedy somberly and resolutely addressed the nation and the world from the Oval Office for 17 minutes regarding the escalating crisis over the Soviet Union’s recently discovered and ongoing attempt to secretly deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Cuba.

What is it with autocrats and trees? Trump chops down hundreds of trees in Washington. Netanyahu destroys hundreds of trees in the West Bank.

It isn’t just Valerie Harper who goes everywhere with Trump. So does the “nuclear button.” He can figuratively press it anytime, for any reason. No one can stop him.

Stephen Schwartz@atomicanalyst.bsky.social

The White House Military Office Air Force aide is on “Football” duty this afternoon for Trump’s campaign trip to Pendleton, South Carolina. The ~45-lb. satchel trails Trump 24/7, enabling him alone to authorize the use of any of our ~1,770 deployed nuclear weapons—up to 900 on alert—at any time.

Important from @edwardluce. Pathetic to see irresponsible academic showboating by guys like Mearsheimer seeking to provide cover for Trump's despicable position.

Edward Luce@edwardluce.bsky.social

"Mearsheimer merits attention because he lends academic respectability to those blaming the west for Russia’s bloody war of conquest. At a moment when the US has swung behind Putin's driove to snuff out Ukraine such cover is invaluable." as.ft.com/r/2861010e-b...

Ukraine was winning the war, so Trump kneecapped Ukraine to help Russia. I wish it weren’t that simple, but it is. Our president is in bed with our enemies.

SpaceX got almost $6 BILLION in taxpayer-funded defense contracts last fiscal year. Meanwhile, SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, has spent over $360 MILLION in our elections this cycle. This should be illegal — but it isn't. I'll be introducing a bill to close the loophole that allows it.

Fine. Illegal aggression. Fine. War crimes. Fine. Kidnapping children fine. Destroying infrastructure. Fine. Threatening the security of all of Europe. Fine. All of it is fine. As usual with Trump, the criminals are protected, even advocated for. It's the victims who are condemned and abandoned.

This may be the most outrageous, disgusting, offensive thing Trump has ever said. If not, it is tied for the honor. Russia has been fine on Ukraine. It makes me want to puke.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Trump: "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine."

Trump started an illegal war, prices are through the roof, Americans are hurting, & yet he lays awake thinking about how to screw our DC neighbors & take over their public parks. Out of touch doesn’t even begin to describe it.

National security is not exempt from corruption. It may be the most corrupt issue area of all. joecirincione.substack.com/p/the-comple...

We have to stop Trump’s sweetheart deal with the Saudi monarchy. This is a Saudi nuclear bomb program, not an energy deal. Thank you @markey.senate.gov and @jeff-merkley.bsky.social.

Senator Ed Markey@markey.senate.gov

The U.S.-Saudi nuclear deal is about megatons, not megawatts. Trump should not be sharing nuclear bomb technology with a nation that U.S. intelligence says may want nuclear weapons. This is the starting gun for a Middle East nuclear arms race. We must reject this dangerous deal.
