Raise your hand if you've ever been asked by leadership or stakeholders for an estimate (a project completion date, a cost projection, etc) ... and despite all attempts to communicate the inherent uncertainty, the number or date is now cast in concrete as what everyone assumes _will_ happen 🫠

What if I told you there was a better way? In this post I talk about using monte carlo simulation and histogram charts to help not only in modeling the projections themselves, but to also help communicate the uncertainty in the model. codecube.net/2026/1/monte...

codecube.netMonte Carlo Simulation for Projections and EstimatesI first read The Flaw of Averages by Sam Savage about 15 years ago, back when I worked in the finance industry. I don’t remember every chapter, but I do remember the central idea—and it has shaped ...

Working on a fun new project ... anyone out there doing parametric #CAD with #JSCAD? I'm writing a vscode plugin that lets you stay right in editor to visualize/export your work. I've got some ideas for some cool features, but I'd love to get some feedback from real folks working in this space :)

1/2) I've seen several posts dunking on data centres in space proposals, often by citing things like the cooling issue, radiation, power, etc. Those are all valid concerns. But, Bluesky folks, the people making these proposals are not as dumb as you are assuming. 🧪 #MLSky

Can our billionaires in America develop a sudden interest in architecture and start building some grand things in our cities? We may as well get cool buildings and environments in exchange for our dystopia

“You can’t defend capital and people at the same time” … helluva quote

Dennis Detwiller@drgonzo123.bsky.social

The Dem leadership — as demonstrated by their utter failure to defend democracy — only exists for the protection of the capital-owning class. It's impossible for them to be relevant even in the face of this unfolding disaster, because you can't defend capital and the people at the same time.

I think something democracy has never faced before is a populace with years and years of algorithmically supercharged perceptions of “the other side”

To be honest though ... ChatGPT's sycophancy is helping democratize access to that multi-layered-bubble of agreeable yes-men 😅

Dennis Detwiller@drgonzo123.bsky.social

People really don't understand how warped the truly rich are. They exist in a multi-layered-bubble of sycophants, each paid half a million dollars a year to keep the consequences of that super-rich person's failures and the word "no" from their ears. They are flying blind with no real feedback.

As coding agents get more capable, it seems like they’re using more and more compute to handle longer and more complex tasks. Devs will increasingly have to start rationing where they do their AI thinking to avoid burning through their credits. codecube.net/2025/8/tiers...

codecube.netTiered Thinking in the Age of AINot too long ago, everyone was wondering whether $20 a month for an AI coding tool was worth it. Today, devs are easily blowing past $200 worth of capacity in a single billing cycle, and it’s easy ...

Figured it out ... _turns out_, a .NET executable will have very different semantics around the current working directory in different contexts: - running from dotnet run on the project - running dotnet run on the .dll - when installed as a dotnet tool

I got into tech because it’s fun to take things apart, see how they work, and put them back together — or rearrange the parts into something brand new. it definitely feels like the new ethos is “bro why bother to learn? caring about that stuff is cringe, just go FAST bro” and that bums me out

the main thing that makes me uneasy about llms is the cultural backdrop of global war on knowledge. the war on knowledge isn’t new but now it’s cheered on from tech too. tools for thought pivoted to slot machines because that’s what people want. “how things work” is buried under opaque indirections

Before I get banned or blocked for going about this the wrong way… Does anyone know the best way to pull things out of the Internet way back machine? I’d like to go in and extract some of my very early blog posts from the early 2000s that I don’t have.

On the eve of GPT5 launching, I start to wonder how the future will evolve. As we keep integrating these new tools into our workflows, will we (collectively) get to keep the generated value, or will it be increasingly extracted from us. codecube.net/2025/8/ai-br...

just a reminder that sustained overwork leads to exhaustion and increased error rates — sustained 60 hr/wk employees are actually LESS productive than if they worked 40 hours

Feels like with every passing day, individuals are asked to take on a wider array of responsibilities; in previous years they might have been the responsibility of someone who specialized in that role. Increasingly frayed engineers ask, is this the only way forward? codecube.net/2025/8/team-...

I think a lot about the “harmless” part of “helpful, honest, harmless” which has been the (vague) rallying cry of AI Alignment. I consider AI doing student homework to be harmful at the individual and societal levels. Very much in conflict with “helpful”.
