I'm an ex-archaeologist, history lover, RPG gamer, and hobby farmer. I should probably also mention, I'm a freelance TTRPG editor, specializing in translated games.

My first five ttrpgs in the order I played them: 1. Empire of the Petal Throne 2. Metamorphosis Alpha 3. Traveler 4. Boot Hill 5. AD&D 1E Quickly moved from AD&D to Runequest 2E in 1981, and didn't play D&D again until 2008.

We watched Backrooms last night. That was... something. Very affecting. Glad we saw it but I left the theater feeling queasy and slightly untethered from reality, both of which took a while to wear off.

I ordered some miniatures from this place called The Dungeon hobby shop, and they came with a flier for a game called Empire of the Petal Throne, which I bugged my parents to buy for me for Christmas.

What happened to you that changed the entire trajectory of your life?

I posted this on reddit, but thought I'd share it here too. These are my "Portfolio Shelves". All of the games on the shelves to the right are ones that I have edited/proofread/localized. I'm looking forward to Outgunned: Superheros and Twilight Sword joining the crew.

Weird GaryCon story. My friend Roger and I listened to the "When we were Wizards podcast on our 12 hour drive from Alabama up to Lake Geneva (if you are a TTRPG nerd, well worth a listen). They talk about the first TSR offices outside Gary's house, calling it the "Old Gray House". (continued)

I realized on our drive back that this house was also the Dungeon Hobby Shop, where my parents ordered my very first RPG (Empire of the Petal Throne) from in November of 1976. My nearly 50 year journey into RPGs was launched from this same house.

On Sunday, after an amazing con, we finished our morning games and went looking for a cheese shop I had found online to buy cheese for friends at home (as you do in Wisconsin). We ran across a different cheese shop (yes, there are many), and decided to drop check it out.

We were cheese shopping and chatting with the nice lady who owned the shop, when Roger said that were in town for GaryCon. She said, "Oh, did you know that this house used to be TSR headquarters?" We were flabbergasted. The cheese shop we had randomly walked into was the Old Gray House.

Looks like a cool Mork Borg project.

Baby Tapirs are hands down the cutest animals on the planet.

Timeline cleanse: Baby tapir getting scritches for their itches. If you want to scritch your very own tapir & you live outside of Central or South America or SE Asia, you'll need to visit a zoo. But these little guys are (evolutionarily) from around here, in North America. Let's talk about it.

I love everything Mun Kao does, and I think Kala Mandala is an exquisite little gem of a game with a unique SE Asian flavor and very cool dungeon adventures. Check it out if you like non-euro-centric RPGs and interesting OSR-style dungeons. Highly recommended.

*Reposts appreciated” My webstore heycentaur.com is finally up! This took so many months of labour (mostly my partner’s), but it is all ready and running. Physical copies of Kala Mandala are now available, shipping to most of the world.

10 TTRPGs I want to play/run in 2026. 1. Twilight Sword 2. Legend in the Mist 3. Blades in the Dark 4. Walking Dead 5. Cairn 6. Daggerheart 7. Dolmenwood 8. Alien 9. Shadowdark 10. Pirate Borg

Apparently I'm not alone in feeling this way either.

I may be in the minority, but for me, chaos and shenanigans are not the goal at a #ttrpg table. I'm not against humor, but I love serious stories and games with stakes, and players and characters who take the secondary world and situations seriously. Just me?

What are your top 5 TTRPG settings? Here are the five I keep coming back to: 1) Doskvol, from Blades in the Dark 2) Vimary, from Tribe 8 3) Gloam, from Shadows over Driftchapel 4) Innistrad, from Magic: The Gathering 5) The Known World, from Artesia There's a definite dark/gothic theme in there.

The lack of formal initiatove means that play flows seamlessly into and out of combats, and the spotlight shifts around to individual moments of drama like you're watching a movie. It also keeps everyone engaged, since your opportunity to act could come at any time.

The death moves are so much more flavorful than the death saves of 5E, and out control over the character's fate completely in the player's hands, befitting the heroic nature of the game (as opposed to an OSR game).

Had a fun session of Mythic Bastionland last night. We had our first two Knightly deaths, but the company also resolved their first Myth by defeating a stone colossus that had been rampaging through the mountains. This game continues to be so easy to run after some minimal initial prep.

I'm excited for this RPG! "It’s folk horror set in the dying fields and forgotten hollers of Depression-era America. A land of dust and desperation. Of ghost trains and crossroads devils. Of sin-eaters, juke joints, and something ancient stirring in the soil." www.backerkit.com/c/projects/k...

My weekly TTRPG crew is voting for our next game. I gave them 6 options: Daggerheart, Kala Mandala, Mythic Bastionland, Cairn 2E, Cloud Empress, and Pirate Borg. As the GM, I'll be happy with whichever game wins, they are all so good!

At the ICE raid and subsequent community resistance in Paramount, California this morning, this skater kid ate dozens of munitions from Border Patrol agents, walked away slowly and flipped them off.

I'm a forever GM, but got a rare chance to play in a session of Daggerheart last night (thanks Ben!). Really enjoyed it from the player's side, and look forward to playing more, and potentially running it at some point.

One of the things I enjoyed most about our session was the free-form initiative. I ran a lot of Dungeon World back in the day, but I had forgotten how much more cinematic combats are when you don't have a strict, formal initiative order.
