Andy Burnham’s speech yesterday was great & much welcomed because it addressed much of the agenda set by the Left over recent years. The role of the Left now will be to engage constructively in discussions over how & how far this agenda will be delivered & how much more is needed. 1/7

5. Why give this gift to Reform & the Tories when it won’t raise anywhere near the funds for a national social care service & when there are so many alternative methods of securing these resources through a series of tax reforms that would introduce a fairer taxation of wealth.

The triple lock proposal is for after the next election but investment in home/personal care is needed now & not just for pensioners. So let’s have discussion about the triple lock whilst also urging action in the forthcoming budget to bolster funds of local authorities to provide home care now.

3. This was especially needed in a long period of low wages when for many earnings have been effectively frozen since 2008/9 and so as a result we have had a pension linked to very low earnings. 4/7

4. The government’s commitment for the pension to hold its value relative to earnings means pensions will stagnate at the current 30% of earnings, one of the lowest levels in Europe with the opportunity lost to increase this rate. 5/7

The triple lock issue is a good example. The Left’s support for the triple lock was because : 1. Pensions are abysmally low already in relation to earnings as a result of Thatcher breaking the link between pensions and earnings eroding the value of the pension over time.2/7

Andrew Fisher in a few sentences exactly sums up the economic situation people are facing, why and what the alternative is.

On the #Today programme this morning discussing corporate profiteering and the debate around windfall taxes and price caps ...

Labour minister’s line now is Keir Starmer never promised vote on “defensive” military action & it’s unprecedented. There was no “defensive” caveat in his promise.Every war has been presented as “defensive” including Iraq & Blair allowed a vote. This is embarrassing sophistry.

Join us on Monday to talk about restoring democracy to the Labour Party. The Mandelson and Labour Together affairs show the need for party members to take back control of their party now more than ever.

The right to a trial by jury is fundamental. There are a range of improvements put forward by legal professionals working in our courts to improve efficiency of our system without the need to restrict access to jury trial. That’s why I’ll vote against threat to jury trial today.

Thanks to the persistent work undertaken by Disability News Service this ongoing failure to address the risk of suicide amongst this vulnerable group of our fellow citizens is revealed. We’ll be pressing government for action.

I’m supporting this campaign from @CHinchliffMP. Polls show the public want stronger protections for nature — not weaker ones. Backwards steps risk turning the nature crisis into a catastrophe. Don’t cross these Red Lines.

It’s the 120th anniversary of the adoption of the name the Labour Party. Today, there’s a growing call across the Labour & trade union movement about the need to restore democracy & members’ rights in the Party. If you agree, sign up to the statement in this video.

I asked the Defence minister today to examine whether the £4 million donation to Labour in 2024 by Quadrature. a hedge fund with sizeable investments in Palentir, a client of Mandelson’s company, had any influence on the award of contracts to Palentir, some without competition.

I have written twice now to Labour’s General Secretary to investigate this story because if true it is immensely damaging to our party.

Pleased to meet representatives of Royal College of Midwives to discuss the need to train & recruit more midwives. I will be working with them to examine the issues in my constituency & how they can be addressed @MidwivesRCM

So proud to support @ucu campaign rally for FE colleges. Attending a night school FE class at Burnley FE college, when I was on the shop floor, transformed my life. It’s shocking how FE lecturers’ pay has fallen back over last 15 years. Investment in staff is desperately needed.

FE transforms lives. From FE student at Burnley College to Shadow Chancellor. John McDonnell MP: “We will be with you at every rally, every dispute and every picket.” Thank you for your ongoing solidarity.

Despite all Trump’s smears Sadiq Khan has behaved with dignity, just getting on with the job of reducing serious crime & his focus on this has paid off with such a significant reduction in homicide rates. Each death is a terrible tragedy. That’s why this work is so important.

Sadiq Khan@sadiqkhanlondon.bsky.social

NEW: Many people have been trying to talk London down, but the evidence tells a very different story.   Last year saw:   The lowest homicide rate since records began   The fewest homicides of those aged under 25 this century

When Keir Starmer appointed Mandelson I said publicly it was a serious error of judgement. I’ve always been a supporter of the BBC in its role as a public broadcaster but the decision to invite Mandelson onto the Kuensberg programme calls into question once more its own judgment.

Over 50 MPs & MSPs have signed a letter to David Lammy, Secretary of State for Justice, urging him to engage with the legal representatives of the pro Palestinian activists on hunger strike. Given the seriousness of their condition the letter says it would be an act of humanity.

Today was the 24th anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo, infamous for its brutal torture of its inmates. For years we have campaigned with some success for the release of innocent detainees & yet 15 remain. Today in London we joined the worldwide protest demanding its closure

I’ve tabled in Parliament a further Early Day Motion calling on David Lammy, as the Secretary of State for Justice, to engage with the legal representatives of the pro Palestinian activists on hunger strike & whose health has seriously deteriorated. Urge your MP to sign EDM 2573

As always an excellently informative article by Naomi Klein.

In this interview I explain why I have supported the campaign to secure the freedom of Alaa Abd el Fattah from an Egyptian prison & his return to his family in Britain based upon the important role he has played in promoting human rights & civil liberties.
