A 3.5-month-old knows that a ball rolling behind a wall is still there. Today we're releasing a full-stack data infrastructure to teach object permanence to AI: 🧠 150 cognitive tasks scaling to 10K+ diverse samples 📦 A 1.5M-sample training set 🚀 A fine-tuned 16B model that validates the data

Excited to have Taylor's work with me and Daphna Shohamy out in Open Mind now: even at the end of an event, it's not too late to prioritize it for long-term memory!

Sometimes we know an experience is important in the moment. Other times, its importance only becomes clear after the fact. Do these two cases have different consequences for memory? In our new paper we found that both kinds of prioritization impact memory in different ways! doi.org/10.1162/OPMI...

Really excited about this project! If you want to chat about repulsion and representational changes in hippocampus, come by our poster at #CCN2026 tomorrow at 9:30!

This should be fun! I'll be talking about what it means for a neural network to have a world model (joint work with @raphaelmilliere.com) and presenting new evidence that the standard example, Othello-GPT, does not have one (joint work with @shauli.bsky.social among others).

Do LLMs *understand* language? Do educational AI agents *understand* the material they teach (or their students)? Claims about what AI systems do or don't understand are pervasive, but assessing them requires an account of MACHINE UNDERSTANDING

Tomorrow, 10:45, talk room 2! Revisiting Iconic Memory with a New Experimental Paradigm @vssmtg.bsky.social #VSS2026

Gal Vishne@neurogal.bsky.social

Arrived @ #VSS2026 @vssmtg.bsky.social 😎🌴 If you're here - come check out my talk on Monday! Revisiting Iconic Memory with a New Experimental Paradigm Room 2 May 18th, 10:45 (1st talk) Super fun collaboration with @johnmorrison.bsky.social & my 1st study from @michaelshadlen.bsky.social lab 🤩

This talk will be 🔥. It should be of special interest to philosophers because of its implications for the overflow debate about consciousness. Gal won't have time to talk about those implications on Monday, but she'll be happy to talk about them after. Hope to see you there!

Can humans & animals really use internal maps to take shortcuts? Tolman famously said yes - based largely on his Sunburst maze. Our new review & meta-analysis suggests evidence is far weaker than you might think. 🧵👇 doi.org/10.1111/ejn.... @uofgpsychneuro.bsky.social @ejneuroscience.bsky.social

Very happy to announce that our paper “Sensory Horizons and the Functions of Conscious Vision” is now out as a target article in BBS!! @smfleming.bsky.social and I present a new theory of the evolution and functions of visual consciousness. Article here: doi.org/10.1017/S014.... A (long) thread 🧵

Chris Baldassano is not only an incredibly talented scientist, he's also an incredibly nice person. Teaching Intro to Cog Sci with him has been pure joy. Check out this accessible overview of his research 👇

For #CCN2025 in Amsterdam, we will, for the first time, have conference proceedings that include both full length peer-reviewed papers and the traditional 2-page track! Deadlines for submissions: 17th February for full papers ( abstract only; full paper on 20th FEB) & 10th April for 2 pagers.

The crisis at Barnard is at least partly because Columbia is trying to solve its own budgetary problems by forcing Barnard to contribute more. This year, it has to contribute ~$12m in addition to its usual contribution of ~$10m.

On a more optimistic note, I just want to say that I'm incredibly proud of the reporting by our students at the Spectator. They are a consistent source of balanced and informed reporting about all issues, large and small.

Nature, Neurons, Mushrooms, Biochemistry, and Consciousness (or the lack thereof). My top illustrations of 2023 summarize my current interests pretty well. Let's hope that in 2024 I can finally find the time to thread some of these into a coherent story. 🧠 #artvsartist #sciart #sciviz

You are up to date.
