I wish Biden had been a war hawk who shipped thousands of Bradleys to Ukraine. I wish our entire stockpile of 155mm rounds were used on Russian soldiers. There isnโ€™t a single escalatory act NATO members could commit against Russia that I wouldnโ€™t support.

You fundamentally just cannot fight and win a war like this. There isnโ€™t a military on earth that could effectively operate when your leadership is waffling back and forth on decisions on a daily basis for months on end. Itโ€™s not sustainable. None of this is sustainable.

This is the largest Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine under the Trump Administration to date.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ The U.S. State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine for Air Defense Development Upgrades for an estimated cost of $2.68 billion. The sale would be financed by European contributions and Foreign Military Financing funds.

A large number of the people counted in this were people who were killed as a result of Al Qaeda in Iraq igniting an Iraqi civil war based on sectarian tensions dating back to Saddam. Yes we invaded the country, and made critically poor decisions, but we were not the only actor involved.

Your regularly scheduled reminder that the Cult of the Gizmo and their financiers, in this case a16z, are lying by omission *at least* to you. Sure an Anthem costs less than a Tomahawk. Itโ€™s 40% of the payload, and with what murderous cost to P-arrival?

โ€œRussian strategists threaten civilian economic and cultural sites with the aim of brutalizing European populations into surrender. Russian targeting of churches and hospitals in Ukraine with dual-capable missiles is meant to foreshadow a similar fate for NATO populations.โ€

Great thread and report. DOE/NNSA are wholly enmeshed in the scientific infrastructure of the country and it is a very mutually beneficial relationship for all the different stakeholders and for the American public. Any decision to reduce these relationships would be penny wise but pound foolish.

Allison Bawden@nukeoversight.bsky.social

Often, NNSA labs & sites do work for other organizations through strategic partnership projects. NNSAโ€”which is reimbursed for the workโ€”and the other orgs both benefit, but as NNSAโ€™s workload grows, so do concerns about its capacity for such work. #nukesky

Very pleased that Zach has finally released his long awaited video on ballistic missile defense. It is an excellent primer on several key concepts. I encourage everyone interested in the subject to give it a watch.

Just for sense of scale, current U.S. Navy op tempo would be properly supported by a fleet of somewhere between fifteen and eighteen supercarriers. The fleet has eleven. โ€œRidden hard and put away wetโ€ doesnโ€™t begin to cover it.

Giled Pallaeon@giledpallaeon.bsky.social

But thereโ€™s a difference between surface rust and structural rust. The United States Navy has many faults. One of them is how hard itโ€™s forced to push the fleet. Itโ€™s easy to keep a ship looking parade-ready in port. Thatโ€™s not what warships are for, and thatโ€™s not what the USN does.

Good thread Langston Hughes, who I am going to say understood this much better than I do or most people on this site do, called it 90 years ago. The idea of America the egalitarian anti-ethnostate, never fully and faithfully executed, is so important that it can never be surrendered.

This is a very difficult one to discuss in public but I think people need to be careful about tea leaf reading too hard on the JASON summaries. The most obvious first: if the report *did* identify an imminent concern w/reliability of the deployed stockpile, that alone would be a TS statement.

Alexander Clarkson@aphclarkson.bsky.social

Yet the crisis of US shipbuilding is so bad that the US Navy is ordering ships from Korean or Italian firms and US logistics depend on bases among allies Colby is typical for an elite so marinated in myths of its power that it forgot to sustain real structures it needs to survive

Has there perhaps been some event taking place in the last 12 years which might be important for understanding why Europe is militarizing?

Katja Diehl@katjadiehl.bsky.social

The study shows militarisation is a bad economic deal: higher military spending leaves Europe less prosperous, with fewer jobs and lower-quality development. Spending instead on environment, education, and health would boost output and employment more. www.greenpeace.org/static/plane...

Iran was strategically on the back foot. Loss of Syrian proxies, inability to restore deterrence against Israel or the US, GCC states slowly accepting Israel in the region, sanctions generally working...and then we put them in a position to gamble for resurrection and boy howdy did they.

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

Oh yeah, this is clearly a defeat. We threw away $30bn+, plus whatever danegeld we're paying, plus 15 American lives, plus a whole bunch of airframes, plus we antagonized a lot of other states, in order to put Iran in a stronger strategic position than they were when we started. Absolute disaster.

This was a bad study for many reasons, not least of which that it rigged the results implicitly in favor of nuclear weapons, but the computers behaved relatively typical of human decision makers. Can we stop talking about it please? I donโ€™t want to retype my screed about how awful it was.

Researchers gave three commercial AI models an exercise typically used to train human military strategists. Each system played the leader of a nuclear-armed country in a standoff. Across 21 simulations, the models chose to use nuclear weapons in all but one game. Read more from Hiranya Peiris.
