My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I’m going to add a few more “maybes” to this list of a complex problem. Maybe because the only area of higher ed that’s grown is administration? Need money for those mid six figure salaries plus perks.

Maybe because even small colleges are asking for $50,000+ per year and the median income for a family of four is $87,000? Maybe because government support for education has vanished under Republicans? Maybe because even a college degree doesn't get you a living wage? Maybe?

Maybe they get that money by making half the faculty adjuncts, not paying them a living wage, so they end up teaching at five separate institutions to try to cobble a life together. Maybe we’re the most anti-intellectual “punch the nerd” nation on the face of the Earth who only wants job training.

Yet there’s another point in the piece that resonates with me. I don’t know how my air conditioner works. Or how linemen do their jobs. I barely know how my car works. I still survive. But how far removed can we get from machinery that moves society before there’s real corrosion?
