I was listening to the news this morning and heard Smith suggest that there would be another referendum in 2027 about stuff like bike lanes, etc Did anyone else hear this? F*ck me, as long as the UCP are in power we are going to waste all Alberta's money on culture war crap #ableg #abpoli

Alberta is such an embarrassment.

Mark Carney on abolishing the Indian Act: "The federal government will start a process with First Nations, with provinces to review options for it. And it's a process. It's not a process with a fixed conclusion, but it's a process to evolve from there."

In America you can call everyone from Somalia “low IQ” and imply that every Muslim is a terrorist and the media will just shrug its shoulders, but come after the decor of the Cheesecake Factory and they will come for you.

Sources are telling me that there will be an RAF airdrop of gerkins over British cities as Andy Burnham’s relief effort mounts

You go into a store these days and there's a whole aisle full of plastic/nylon/acrylic/polyester Hallowe'en stuff. These things are made from fossil fuel stock. Would it not be more fun (and better for life) if the costumes, decorations and treats were simpler and homemade?

It's just struck me how old fashioned I sound in this column. I am asking for intelligent debate on a complex moral issue. That just doesn't happen anymore. Silly me.

Instead of screaming about ‘woke’ could we try having a sensible discussion about whether or not the dead should be on display in museums? Scotland has removed some mummies from display and the culture warriors have gone nuts. Whatever happened to intelligent debate? In @heraldscotland.bsky.social

Turned off "beta", because the notifications interface they are testing is a big headache. BSky has no edit function, there's no character recognition function in the ALT box (both of which Mastodon has) and instead of adding these things that everyone wants, they dick around with the UI/UX. Arggh.

The crassness of the people who are administrating universities in the current era is nauseating. They should be custodians, but many of them have been hired specifically to destroy what has been built up over centuries.

I asked UNH's archivist to create a file of letters protesting the "weeding" of 30% of the library's books. Future researchers need to know faculty did not let the books "go gentle into that good night" (30+ books on Dylan Thomas to be culled). 🗃️ #skystorians www.unionleader.com/opinion/op-e...

So much to say about Brazil, not least of which is the role that Erika Hilton, a Black trans leader and most voted woman politician in Brazil, played in mobilizing folks for Lula. She was behind the critical, concrete, economic promise of shorter work-week. theprint.in/feature/erik...

It’s not the biggest problem with this idea but it’s dumb all around.

An area of California desert was recently lit up at night, baffling locals. Turns out it was the latest step in a US startup's bid to put 50,000 satellites in space to reflect sunlight back to Earth at nighttime via giant mirrors. This quest has many critics. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

I don't think I ever watched an episode of Star Trek (science fiction isn't my thing), but I thought casting a Russian while the Cold War was still raging, to make the point that humans would get along better in the future, was a lovely touch.

Backlash to data centers might very well be the biggest issue in the midterms, with nearly 70 percent of Americans opposing them. Is it any wonder why?
