I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

People, including myself, talk a lot about intersectionality in policies and campaigns. This is a perfect example of why it is important. Ending rough sleeping by Christmas is a nice soundbite to throw out there, but entirely undermined by policies elsewhere which cause more people to be homeless.

🚨They aren't in power, so not a "rival budget" 🚨Cutting foreign students means less money for unis, meaning fewer opportunities for more people, meaning worse employment outcomes later. Reform's"dead end degrees" bs aside. 🚨Reform can't balance a budget using IHS when cutting immigration, clearly

Obviously tackling student loans by cutting foreign students is batshit as majority pay more, and can't access student loans, but how beyond moronic do supporters have to be to look at "we'll cut the number of migrants and make billions by charging migrants more" and not at least question this shit?

Bold picture choice in the FT. The budget announcement would be a lot more interesting if the Leader of the Opposition was allowed to taser the Chancellor.

Which would be great, but doesn't change that he currently presides over a government pushing the most racist and hostile anti-immigration policies in decades. This will play well with some, but does not change that this government is fundamentally anti-immigration. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukBurnham open to 'honest discussion' on EU free movementThe PM said he wants a "factual" and "evidence-based debate" about returning to free movement between Britain and Europe.

Freedom of movement is a great thingvand should be brought back. What is important though is to not let this be played as Labour being anything like decent on immigration. To do that only reinforces the "good/bad migrant" lines we see too often already. Migrants rights have to apply to all migrants.

Multimillionaire who has spent millions trying to destroy the lives of vulnerable people complains that defending people's rights and not wanting trans and non-binary individuals to be eradicated is "elitism". Yeah, she may want to look up what that word means

I strongly believe JK Rowling is basically Tommy Robinson with more money, and those supporting her are no different from Robinson's supporters. Both want to remove rights from marginalised groups. Both use threats, in different forms, to achieve their aims. They are the same, just differing bigotry

There is a huge difference in politics between "opposing" a policy and "not explicitly supporting" a policy. What is need are MPs, and a lot of them, to actively oppose Mahmood's inhumane and hostile anti-immigration policies. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

As someone who quite frankly would not let their father within a country mile of my daughter I really don't see why it is an issue that grandparents should be given limits and boundaries, they are meant to be adults after all

A big, albeit of a number, issue with Labour as a whole, but especially Mahmood, is they don't listen to anything which goes against their own rhetoric. Mahmood in particular seems determined to ignore the people whose lives her anti-immigration policies will destroy. inews.co.uk/news/politic...

This appears to be doing the rounds again. Apparently the Conservatives are “introducing legislation” that will impact fewer than 10 households and will actually INCREASE benefits to those households. But y’know - culture wars are waaaaay more important 😂 bsky.app/profile/monk...

OK, so Helen Whately and the Express are doubling down and going all out hysterical at this point...🙄 They've actually "calculated" the state benefits a man with ELEVEN WIVES could claim!! And this time, they've done it behind a paywalled article🤷‍♀️ But don't worry, I got behind it!🤓 🧵1/20

So to clarify. While UK is making sweeping cuts to foreign aid and leaving some of the most vulnerable people in the world without necessary support, the government is boasting about using it to stop people seeking asylum. Yeah, that's...about right for Labour. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

It's actually sad. I used to genuinely support the BBC news division, and know great reporters who work their, but they aren't the "impartial/balanced" news source they are meant to be. Reporting on migration, trans etc is distinctly skewed towards right wing rhetoric over facts.

I do, genuinely, think the BBC does do superb reporting, just not on politically contentious, or rights based, issues, where overwhelmingly they are shown, via framing, language, lack of context etc, to have a right wing agenda, and I feel for the decent journalists working there tainted by that.

A lot of the time, not always to be sure, there is also the significant issue, not limited to the BBC, that those writing the headlines are not journalists/did not report on the story in question, and instead are playing to what gets a reaction, knowing many people don't read beyond the headline.

We've seen how framing has shifted, e.g. use of "illegal migrants", a term which has no legal basis and is designed to create a hostile narrative, or describing trans women as "biological male who identify as a woman". This automatically removes balance on its own and creates a misleading narrative.

Or the reporting in the original post which suggests there is a balance between the actual stats and Farage's world view, the reporting on individual cases, such as one false immigration or asylum claim, to create an impression of widespread abuse of the immigration and asylum systems

There'll always be issues in news of "not covering it the way 'I' want". Just look at number of people who shout about something not being covered when it is. I'm far from objective but any measured analysis of BBC reporting shows it's not balanced on rights issues. It's right wing on rights issues

So many issues. First and foremost, it's clear Labour is determined to go further than last government on cruelty. Secondly, they don't learn. Hostile policies don't"stop boats". They shift routes.
