Somewhere along the line, I forgot to post here, even though SO MUCH has been happening to me lately. I moved out of London late last year and now a (semi) digital nomad in Europe for a while. Was in Berlin and Prague for a few months, and a week in Brussels too...

Helsinki next weekend, then Sofia, then Lisbon in May, then an actual vacation in Split, Croatia (where my parents met) and planning a few months in the Netherlands, starting with two weeks in Delft in late July. In-between I'm in the small town where I spent my youth: Herrenberg, Germany.

I've had an execeptionally tough year. I have no income or health insurance, and could really use your help finding my next paid project. πŸ’œ semanticfish.com/2025-year-in... Open to front-end, full-stack, design system, & accessibility projects. 10+ years experience. Many more details in post!

semanticfish.com2025: Year in Review | Semantic Fish Creative GroupThis post gets personal about my experiences this year with grief, loss, health emergencies, and being disabled & working in accessibility in the US.

I've been dipping my toes into using background agents with Cursor and over the past couple of days I've gone back and forth on a small feature with it while I had a bunch of non coding tasks fill my days. I had to nudge it a few times, but I'm liking this use case!

New Cursor merch idea: A t-shirt that just says 'You're absolutely right to question this!' And another one that says 'Yes! That's exactly the right approach!' Heck, there's probably a t-shirt subscription model here for 'Things Cursor tells you so you don't rage at it and cancel your paid plan'.

My toxic trait is thinking that as someone who is fluent in German and English, thinking I could just speedrun learning Dutch by reading lists of 100s of Dutch words every day.

This might be one of those 'if I don't understand what this means, then I don't need it' situations.

Web search calls are a bit expensive and sometimes still unreliable. And you need to time them right. Will experiment with grabbing the posts from trending feeds (and its actors) and feeding those into an LLM and see what the quality is like.

My prompt engineering skills are still a work in progress. Apparently saying 'IMPORTANT' and stating in multiple ways not to include non English links is still not enough to prevent that from happening πŸ˜‚

Lukewarm take: A great use of AI in games would be to have shop vendors say completely new but contextual things every time you visit them. Assassin's Creed players know what I'm talking about!

A glimpse into a reasoning model, where deepseek-r1 talks to itself before producing a response for a lasagna recipe. 'So maybe I should...', 'I need to make sure...', 'That might be a nice touch', 'Wait, what about the structure?' etc. Fascinating!

You've heard of tech debt? Let me introduce you to its more niche cousin TypeScript debt, where your code is full of any's and @ts-ignore/@ts-expect-error because you wanted Future You to deal with that and just crank out one more fun feature.
