before the election, doing dogpile coverage on Trump's heavily documented and extremely plausible rape allegations would be Political and therefore improper. after the election it's time to turn the page, let bygones be bygones, look forward not backward, bsky.app/profile/hoff...

there are a million things worse in the report, but a random billionaire hornball starting a beauty pageant for 14-to-19-year-olds is a red flag you can see from space, and I feel like society should have been better about saying "Hey hold on there just one minute buddy"

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

All of this is true, but also, one lesson of WWII and the Spanish Civil War is that we as a nation should have had stronger opinions about the rise of fascism in Spain if we didn’t want to wind up mounting an invasion of Normandy a decade later. The global rise of fascism is bad and affects us all.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Democrats laying the groundwork for real opposition, with Congress asserting budget authority to stand against Trump abuses and rights violations. Will have to overcome cries that not passing Trump's budget is irresponsible. But it's the opposite. And starting now makes that hurdle easier to clear.

NEWS --> Dems are planning novel ways to wield power of the purse against Trump's corrupt prosecutions of critics like Ilhan Omar if they win House. Reps Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin tell me a range of aggressive tactics will be deployed. Details in my new piece: newrepublic.com/article/2171...

Seems important to note in Brazil and South Korea that *putting* *fash* *coupleaders* *in* *jail* works. And that letting them go free doesn’t work. Consequences >>> conciliation

Deeply disheartening to see what appears to be a deliberate effort to suppress the votes. Hope they pay the consequences.

Honestly I'd suggest voting before Nov 3 and saving yourself a lot of stress. I know it's tough to get it done before the last day, but this is probably the year to push through.

The U.S. Department of Justice informed King County Elections Director Julie Wise this week that the administration is sending election monitors for the Nov. 3 midterms. It’s unclear what role federal election monitors will play or how many there will be in King County on Election Day.

Yeah, people should not be able to cosplay Nazi leadership in the Nazi village built exclusively by and for Nazis. Let it remain ashes.

I don’t hold with the critics of electoralism or people who mock “vote blue no matter who,” but the Galloway position here 100% feeds that apathy. “Democrats should win in ‘26 and do nothing about it until ‘28 because winning Congress doesn’t actually matter” is not a motivating argument.

scott galloway and jessica tarlov held an event here in town yesterday where “don’t impeach or waste time on investigations because ‘28” was the consensus position of the panel. so yeah, this is something to anticipate.

There is the proverbial “throw babies into woodchippers machine. Donald Trump has the switch right now. Dems in ‘28 can just flip it. In ‘26 they can do things like find out who built it and fire those guys and cut off payments for its power bill. Not as good as flipping the switch, but it helps.

“Elect me and I’ll beg Trump to flip the baby-woodchipping switch” isn’t it. Not what’s driving people to flip Kansas and Nebraska and Texas and finally oust Susan Collins. Anyone saying that will satisfy folks isn’t paying attention to how folks like Mamdani have used power once they get it.

If Democrats actually win big because people want a check on Trump corruption I expect every move to do so will be covered in the corporate media as being risky to their 2028 position.

I can confirm. Indivisible Action spends about a dime of every dollar raised on fundraising costs, which is very efficient. They are a good example of what a genuine grassroots operation looks like.

Indivisible ❌👑@indivisible.org

We’ve seen a lot of recent reporting on shady fundraising tactics that get Democratic consultants rich, but don’t do much to help Democratic campaigns. So let us be as clear as humanly possible: Every dollar you donate today will be spent on winning the midterms and protecting the results.

The thing about Matt Yglesias is that bloggers tended to succeed as much by having hot and consistent takes, and being willing to fight other people for them. He doesn’t have to be right. The argument is the point. He’s wrong about whether to fight ICE, but he doesn’t think he can back down.

Indeed, a cafe next to a park is kinda perfect, because your kids can run and climb on the playset with friends and the grownups can play with their friends. Walk the dog, sit for coffee with whoever you meet. The two destinations enhance each other. If you can get there.

Walkability has to be both the destination and the route. Residential acreage doesn’t create destinations. Parks aren’t the right destination for all needs or all bodies or all weathers. Diversity of choices is the key. That’s why cozy retail matters. Not as business development, but for people.

View full thread

A hundred years ago, exclusionary zoning disrupted that natural process. Across America, people are going to older cities here or in Europe, and discovering that walkable, cheery, friendly neighborhoods need retail. And are rewriting city rules to allow this fundamentally human process to resume.

A side note: I try not to talk about “walkability,” because that can mean anything and nothing. What we want is places where people can walk, and safe ways to walk, bike, and roll there. Those destinations can be parks and other public space, or privately owned third spaces.

View full thread

Because making these walkable third spaces isn’t just about my wanting more places to get coffee and ice cream and a sandwich (although…) Walkable neighborhoods emit less carbon, and send less toxic runoff to poison salmon. They create connections for kids who don’t drive and seniors who stopped.

The let everyone be independent. They help neighbors meet and care for neighbors. They give people a new income source. Corner stores and cozy retail like this are how cities have grown since the idea of a city was invented. It’s part of a process of succession as natural as meadow becoming forest.

There’s still a lot of conversation to come, but it feels good to see these ideas getting support on council and in the community, and moving toward being a reality. Appreciate all the help people online and offline have given to moving this forward.

On Monday, I proposed that our little city ban sales of new fur garments, in part on grounds that fur farms are a public health threat. Couldn’t feel more validated in that suggestion, and glad my colleagues agreed to move that ordinance forward.
