Chow performed better than 2023 in every ward, except 4. York Centre was really the only place where she saw a worse margin against Bradford than she did against Bailao. She ran up huge numbers in Downtown and Scarborough. Her second biggest increase was in Brad's ward.

If you live in Toronto and you haven’t voted already, please vote today. Olivia Chow may not be perfect but she’s secured record housing funds, expanded school meals, and improved services like 911 and libraries. Bradford wants to help Ford destroy our city. So please vote - it matters!

Sometimes I just want to give it all up and become the nanny of three sickly sweet children who might be even richer if their handsome British father produced a musical about cats.

CARRIE SPOILERS: The more I think about it, the more I understand why Flanagan chose to tell the story that way. I don't agree with every aspect of it, but the intention was to model Carrie on a school shooting scenario, externalize her feelings through a friend, and then explore that partnership.

It does fundamentally change the character of Carrie as a lone wolf, and offer up an ending that is neither reflective of the original book or of how many real-life school shootings play out. Whether he uses S2 to look at spree killers or as merely a King franchise launchpad is still tbd.

My hope is maybe a clever way to do both, but Flanagan's work is notoriously optimistic in a way that will likely require a happy ending. So we'll see.

The Sinister Trans Lobby wants scary things like “bodily autonomy“ and “equality“ and “safety“ ooooOOOOOooooh spooky

Mark Grimshaw@markgrimshawtism.bsky.social

A reminder that the “trans lobby” is just trans people going about their lives, and the “fight” being referred to is JK Rowling using her money, power and influence to endorse policy that is killing trans people. I’m amazed she could move to type a new essay with the layers of blood on her hands.

Sissy Spacek credits Gustave Doré religious etchings and Gustave Moreau paintings for inspiring the physicality of her Carrie performance, and it truly is what makes her breakdown otherworldly, familiar, and rooted in character. This is a girl shaped by the iconography of a wrathful God.

Lots of fantastic actresses have portrayed the character since, but I'd argue that none of the prom scenes have ever felt as visceral or weird because all of the performers have only ever been doing versions of Spacek's take without fully understanding what she was doing.

This isn't a temper tantrum or a Stranger Things-style hovering hand. This is the human chrysalis falling away, revealing a terrifying, otherworldly butterfly. This is the avenging angel, our ancestral depictions of death come to life. Everything since De Palma has never given into this truth.

I genuinely don't think that human civilization is compatible with "100 dudes should own everything, make nothing, but get infinitely increasing money forever"

Big year for media about misunderstood ginger telekinetic women with destructive public crash outs being adopted by super powered surrogate families.

Our cultural obsession with sequels, franchises, and cinematic universes is robbing stories of their endings and, ultimately, their power. If stories never end, they are meaningless. If characters can never die, why the fuck do we care?

Perhaps it’s more a reflection of both the state of the industry and social media usage as a whole, but Canadian screenwriter Bluesky is a pale imitation of the old Canadian screenwriter Twitter.

Saw this dude in suspenders and slacks and with a mustache, huffing away on a smoke behind an old bank building, and it was all so gloriously analogue until he took out his smartphone.

“Smoking is gross and it kills you!” Yeah, so does life. And there’s something weirdly unbearable about a culture that refuses to accept mortality. Way better when we didn’t believe that human existence is about optimization and not, say, survival.
