This article is exhaustive and fascinating. It ties together the FL citrus biz and its many challenges with regional history and a healthy splash of anecdotal narrative. Stories like this are why writers want to be writers.
The Florida orange crop has collapsed 95 percent in 20 years, headed for a century-low 12 million boxes. 100 percent of the trees are infected with a disease transmitted by an invasive Chinese bug, and deemed "incurable." Who killed the Florida Orange? slate.com/business/202...

Bleak AND boring is terminal. And for what? This is what happens when conservatives gain total control over the mechanisms of culture and media.
Between banning books, non-white people, genders, immigrants, comedians, journalism… And then pushing AI which just regurgitates new ideas… America is headed into a deep cultural recession. This place is bleak and getting increasingly boring.
A single story like this would have been enough to endanger a presidency in the past, especially for a D. But there are probably 10 things more corrupt that the Trump govt did just yesterday to obfuscate this abuse of power and resources so it hardly rates. And during a govt shutdown! Deplorable.
Pre-ordered the latest book by @chanda.blacksky.app and cannot wait to read it. It doesn‘t come out until April, but what’s a few months of earth time in relation to the infinitude of the cosmos? Chanda will probably explain it to anyone lucky enough to read this book✨✨ bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

Tear-gassing tree lined streets is Katrina-level optics and that the White House can’t or won’t recognize it how a president goes from ~40% approval to ~25% in a hurry.
Border patrol agents deployed tear gas on the 3700 block of North Kildare where residents say a landscape worker, a resident, and a woman on a bike were detained. Video from a resident.
Now I really must go see this film in the theater.. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...
Will you please support Broadway actors and musicians seeking decent healthcare from the Broadway League by signing this petition? Their unions are fighting for a fair contract right now and need your support! actionnetwork.org/petitions/st...

Justice for our federal scientists! The assault on knowledge must stop!
JUST IN: The FDA’s top vaccine official, Dr. Peter Marks, has been pushed out. In his resignation letter, he slams RFK Jr. for rejecting “truth and transparency” and pushing “misinformation and lies.” Marks warns of an “unprecedented assault on scientific truth.”
Only a true enemy of the people would destroy the unparalleled edifice of intellect and knowledge that is American science. We need justice for scientists like Kelton! Solidarity with scientists everywhere!
There are days in life that shake you. I’m shattered 💔 to share that I just found out that the US Government terminated my 2024 NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (~$2 million), threatening my long-promised assistant professor job at Columbia University & academic career... 1/🧵

This is horrifically on the money.
If I was Putin, with agents inside US Govt, these would be the instructions to finish off the US as a global force: 1. Gut safety agencies covering aviation, nuclear, food & disease protection. 2. Dismantle USAID 3. Introduce tariffs to crash economy & cripple food production 4. Betray Europe

As usual, AOC nails it on the head. Adams must go!
Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges. This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.

How long until it dawns on rural voters that voted overwhelmingly for Trump that his finding cuts will destroy their way of life? They’ll be closing their schools or going down to half weeks if/when he does his dance of destruction on the DOE too. Red states will suffer most by far. True story.
"Some of our rural health centers could be 100 miles apart from each other. If one center closes, patients will have to travel one hour, two hours to get to another location. So, the rural parts of the commonwealth will be affected more than some of the urban areas.”
Dude should get a haircut if he really wants to cosplay agents of the Trump regime.
A 22-year-old Temple University student was arrested for allegedly posing as an ICE agent (with two friends) at both a local business (Insomnia Cookies) and Temple residence halls. The three were traveling in a Jaguar SUV, per the Inky: www.inquirer.com/news/ice-imp...

The federal government *regularly* spends money to encourage behavior it couldn’t compel directly. Like paying states to build roads or fund healthcare for those who can’t afford it. It’s called the Spending Clause—and it’s the very first enumerated power that the Constitution gives to Congress. 🤦🏻♂️
