One. Met him when he visited my university during grad school!

To flip some discourse script for a bit: what’s y’all’s Obama number (ie degrees of separation with the former president)? Mine is 3

400,000 barrels is about 77 minutes worth of gas and diesel usage in the US.

US authorizes emergency release of up to 400,000 oil barrels from strategic reserve, putting the SPR at the lowest level since 1982.

I have a lot of questions about this. He was initially diagnosed with superficial clots, which don't normally cause emboli... but was told not to sleep, which is primarily a precaution for unstable/new DVT? So did they know he had a DVT and let him play anyway? This makes no sense to me.

Ian Rapoport@rapsheet.bsky.social

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, who is out for the season after several blood clots were revealed in his lungs. Before the London game, Hurts was in the hospital until 4 am and did not sleep because sleep was a risk. He played the game without having slept. Crazy.

When I was in grad school I was working late one night when I heard someone yell from the hallway. I went to check & another grad student had picked up a bat that landed in the hallway and it bit him. I had to drag him to the clinic the next day for vaxxes. He was here on a Fulbright scholarship.

Going out is made up of things very sensitive to inflation, staying in is mostly things sensitive to Moore's law. You might as well have drawn this in crayon.

Dude might actually end up breaking crazification before this is over.

New Fox poll's internals are brutal for Trump: *approval on inflation 22-77 *approval w/ independents 21-78 *approval w/ Latinos 21-79 *underwater w/ noncollege whites and non-MAGA Rs (!) On the pod we bring you the numbers and discuss whether the polls are correct: newrepublic.com/article/2167...

The Ohio Republican Party had to cancel a statewide ticket appearance tonight in Columbus if you want to know how it’s going for them.

If these were different people, ones with self awareness and humor, I'd think this was a bit to tweak the people interested in it. But they aren't, and it isn't.

Crazy idea: Democrats should defend immigration and immigrants, run on the idea that immigrants make America great, and stop Homer Simpsoning themselves into the shrubbery every time Republicans try to demagogue it.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

New Marist poll of Texas finds 61% say undocumented immigrants should stay in US if meet certain requirements. Only 35% say they should leave. A majority of noncollege white men (Trump base) says stay. Supports my case (see piece/thread below) that Trump opened way for new pro-immigrant consensus

The thing that you have to remember about this dude is that internal consistency doesn't exist. His opinion of someone is entirely related to how useful they've been to him lately and Guilfoyle made him look bad, so he's going to tack to whatever position makes her look bad and him good.

Not only should brooks and others shut up. But Ossoff is the best example in the country of a Democrat playing dominance politics and using it to control the whole terms of his race.

Just to underline the monstrousness of this: The risk of Hepatits B developing into a chronic infection, the most dangerous and life-altering type, is inversely proportional to age. In an adult, it's around 5-10%. In infants, it's 90%. In children 1-5, 50%.

Rachel Fairbank@sweetsciencewriter.bsky.social

“The children who are randomly selected not to receive the birth dose of the vaccine, those who “lost the lottery”, face in their earliest days the risk of contracting hepatitis B, which can cause irreversible lifelong damage.” No words. I am speechless. This violates all ethical boundaries.

25% of children infected die of cirrhosis and liver failure. Another 25% will develop liver cancer. The other 50% will *just* have debilitating flares of symptoms that can sometimes last for weeks. Everyone responsible for this should be loaded onto a rocket and fired into the sun.

The machine did not "go rogue." The machine belongs to and is the responsibility of the people who own it. Hold those people accountable for their goddamn machine.

This is utterly vile and anyone who watches it for non-journalistic purposes should be airlifted to a remote island in the Pacific Ocean.

I realize that this is dangerously close to a West Wing bit but 31% of the population approve of the job he's doing and 44% would still vote for him. 13% don't like the job he's doing and would STILL VOTE FOR HIM ANYWAY. WHAT IS THEIR DAMAGE?

This was about Texas but it applies broadly. Enjoy their suffering, even if it's ephemeral, you deserve it. Lighten up and feast on the temporary sorrow.

James S. Pumpkins@jspumpkins.bsky.social

Look, I'm going to enjoy the vibes coming off of this polling because 1) it makes Republicans miserable and their misery sustains me and 2) it costs me nothing if the polling is wrong because we'll lose a race everyone expected us to lose anyway.

30 more days of this for Republicans, bahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha <gasp> hahahhahahahhahahahhahahaha

While I'm on the same side of this sentiment, people don't realize how far right the combination of population loss and gerrymandering have transformed this state. We are closer to Montana and South Dakota than most people seem to appreciate.

ohio we will be unmerciful in our mockery if you elect this guy

Allow me to give just one example: the town of ~10k I live in has dwindled from 8 schools to 3 in less than ten years because of RW voucher progs and charter schools. We are lost and will only vote for the better when no other option is available. Spend your time and money elsewhere.

Honestly, I think it's a lot easier to generate pathos for internet personalities through TikTok (and to a lesser extent Instagram) because video and audio are generally more compelling, so the platform has shifted as tech advanced.

This is why they went so hard on indirect costs/overhead in the first round of this. That money goes directly to universities to pay for core facilities and upkeep/maintenance costs.

Dan Garisto@dangaristo.bsky.social

OMB has not repeatedly proposed a 55%+ cut to NSF because of 'woke' research—even if you eliminated all of the grants flagged in the Cruz report, you wouldn't scratch 10% of the budget. It is because NSF heavily funds universities.

Do not forget that Linda McMahon covered up the systematic abuse of young boys by two of her employees and personally hired them back after they were fired, after which they continued their systematic abuse.

Every student in Colorado & across the country deserves to feel safe, supported & protected at school, no matter what. The Dept of Eds decision to roll back Title IX protections for LGBTQ students is a devastating step backward. I'll keep fighting to ensure EVERY student is protected under the law.

Ooh, I know this one -- Because at some point a decision was made to shift the cost (in both resources and time) of training onto the employees themselves and the state. Many groups participated in this, including universities and the state itself.

If our mission is just to train students to become good workers, then Torenberg is right--why not leave that to the industries themselves, who actually know what they're looking for?

Training for the increasing number of non-manufacturing jobs was more complex and resource-consuming, so universities created programs to pick up some of that burden. To increase access, financial aid programs were created/expanded.

At some point though, industries realized that they could save a whole lot of money and time by requiring Bachelor's degrees for jobs that could be trained without it -- thus, degree inflation.

It used to be, in many fields (especially in STEM) that your advisors were also helped you make the connections that got you jobs, even at the Bachelors level. As access increased in the 70s, this became less true by sheer weight of numbers and the idea transmuted into university = job training.
