Created a post it note system to keep track of bugs and issues. I've done this in other project and I can't believe it took me this long to set it up. #gamedev #Indigames

Apparently Coba is multiplayer now. Awesome. I was really hoping to spend the rest of the week rebalancing the entire game around this completely intentional feature. #Indiedev #screenshotsaturday #Itsafeature

Drone Harrier! Inspired by the arcade classic Space Harrier. Aero uses his Drone to vanquish enemy bots! Getting the Mode 7-like 3D effect working was surprisingly tricky. This is definitely one I’d love to come back to and polish up someday. #screenshotsaturday #Indiegames #gamedev

I really wish I liked Kingdom Hearts. My feed is completely hijacked by it right now, and honestly, I could use that kind of joy in my life. Not that I dislike Kingdom Hearts specifically. I just have a hard time enjoying any amalgam of different IPs. Like Wreck-It Ralph or Ready Player One.

#Asemulator v1.0.0 releases on August 28th! 🎉 The Top-down and Side-scroller templates will be available on the same date. Get ready to preview, test and share your characters' animated sprites in context, directly in @aseprite.org! Reposts highly appreciated~

Currently reading 1984 again, and I’m having a hard time figuring out how this country is somehow becoming 1984 and Idiocracy simultaneously. Is "moronitarianism" a word?

This is nice, but I use the Only Posts feed. It filters out all reposts instead of doing it one at a time. bsky.app/profile/did:...

I recently built playable game ads at work, and I fell in love with the challenge of creating a polished slice of a game that fits under 5 MB. Here are my tips for a completely free 2D workflow, whether you are making a playable ad or HTML5 game. 🧵 1/9

My technical stack is TypeScript, Vite, and Phaser. And Node.js to bundle to a single HTML file. I also use a GitHub Action to deploy automatically to itch.io, which makes sharing and playtesting new builds quick and painless. 8/9

Playable ads and HTML5 games are a fantastic design constraint. You have to think carefully about every texture, sound, dependency, and interaction while still making the result feel polished and fun. 9/9

Affinity is a great free alternative to Photoshop and Illustrator. I gave GIMP a serious try, but it was not for me. And unlike Adobe, I especially like being able to switch between vector and pixel workflows in the same application. 6/9

Generate sound effects instead of storing lots of audio clips. Procedural audio can save a surprising amount of space. For music, I use mono OGG Opus at 56 kbps. 7/9 🖖

Use WebP instead of PNG for textures. WebP files are generally smaller, have broad browser support, and every kilobyte matters when the entire game must fit under 5 MB. 4/9

Get comfortable with command-line tools such as free-tex-packer and ImageMagick. I use a script that converts and packs each texture folder into its own atlas. Automation keeps the workflow fast and repeatable. Powers of 2 not necessary. 5/9

Use Phaser 4.x. It is a mature web game engine with built-in physics, particle, tween, and post-processing systems, so you can accomplish a lot without adding heavy dependencies. 2/9

Use bitmap fonts made from your favorite free Google Fonts. SnowB.org can convert them for you. Include the Latin Extended character set if you need broader language support, and use one font throughout the project to keep things small and visually consistent. 3/9

Personal game jam! ANTI-VIRUS is MineSweeper meets Arrow Out. I used several assets purchased off @itch.io Shout out to the terrific @kenney.nl asset pack. This is easy mode, hard mode takes at least 4-5 minutes per level. LOL #screenshotsaturday

One thing that is very frustrating as a game designer. Many games use all controller buttons. But I design a game that only uses A and B buttons, displayed with labels on the screen. Feedback is “Controls were difficult. I didn’t know I was supposed to press B. I’ve never pressed B in my life.”

Seriously thought my house was haunted because I kept hearing random crashes in empty rooms. Turns out command strips last about 6 years. 👻👻👻

Setting up a new workspace and Wacom decided my perfectly functioning tablet is no longer supported on the latest macOS. 🖕 I found OpenTabletDriver and it's 90% functionality. Bless open source projects. 🙏

Photoshop's Quick Export lacks a "Don't Trim" option, which is frustrating. Unity's newish "Sprites from PSD Layers" feature has the same limitation. So here I am, I'm still relying on a Photoshop script I wrote back in 2005. Happy New Year.

I recently worked with Heidi, we both contracted on the same game dev project. She's exceptionally talented, professional, and insightful. I was saddened to learn about the difficulties she's been facing. I hope you'll consider supporting her during this time.

Heidi is one of my closest friends. She's been an ally, a confidant and a co-conspirator for well over a decade. Life has been so fucking unfair to her and I'm hoping that we as an industry can rally to help ease her suffering ❤️ www.gofundme.com/f/ease-the-t...

On Window's you need to install 7.11 GB of Visual Studio products to make Window's builds with Unity (IL2CPP). I guess it's not too bad, just really annoying when I'm trying to make a build quickly.

Excited to announce I’m joining PeopleFun as Principal Technical Game Designer! 🎮 Looking forward to working on innovative mobile games and bringing fresh experiences to players. Can’t wait to dive into what’s next! #GameDev #MobileGames

This is the longest gap in employment I’ve ever had. About 6 weeks. Luckily between the severance, savings, and low debt I was really able to take time to find just the right opportunity.

Here are some of the public lands that would be sold off in the Pacific Northwest under the Republican tax bill. We must stop the reckless pillaging of these national treasures.

I came up with an exciting game idea in 2023. A couple months ago I started putting a couple hours a day into it. I’m not ready to share art or details, but I’ve got the whole story and character concepts done! #screenshotsaturday #gamedev
