I've basically not posted anything online for a little while now and don't really want to actively use twitter anymore so I guess my random technical rambling will continue here.

If you wish to build the Torment Nexus from scratch, you must first write the classic sci-fi novel Don't Create The Torment Nexus

My guess is most use cases for transfer16 don't care about extra bits and even fewer would call for using SoftwareSPI so nobody noticed. Bit unfortunate that in my case the extra bits nearly caused magic smoke, due to some less-than-great hardware design on my part, but at least the bug was found?

Spent multiple evenings trying to figure out why a simple pico-based board with audio out was drawing a quarter of an amp. Turns out it's not my board's fault at all. My PC just has a nearly quarter amp ground loop current between front panel and back panel USB. I hate computers, man.

Unrelated but on topic for hating computers, how does the alt text form suck so much on mobile? Can't edit without the cursor jumping to the end. Sorry I couldn't make it more descriptive this time.

Dammit, I preordered some things on aliexpress that I thought were an original design, but have just found out they're a stolen design when it's like 2 days too late to cancel the orders.

I put an indicating silica gel packet in a box of 50 VHS-C tapes last week and it's already turned fully dark. Oh no. Checked through a few of them and there are signs of possibly a little bit of mould. Gonna have to get a tape cleaner before I transfer the rest of these.

Woken up by my UPS triggering in short bursts without any other signs of actually losing power so I guess the power is a bit unstable, that's rather unusual round here so a bit concerning

After episode two nothing like that yet but we'll see. Did get a bit of a pointing wojak pose or whatever this is called though.

Odd thing I'm seeing among various electronic modules on aliexpress at the moment: voltage ratings like "3V-4.99V". I guess it's to avoid any implied tolerance in "5V" since so many things put out >5.2, but wouldn't "5.0V" suffice?

Porting a tune from Adlib Tracker II to OpenMPT, having to use some workarounds for the lack of a second effect column but it's going pretty well otherwise. Portamento seems to work the same or very close. FM parameters are backwards but there's only two instruments so that wasn't much of a bother.

It's fun to look around old MC world downloads and find stuff like this and wonder about the people who built them

That said, the main castle area looks like it was built in artificial terrain and then copy-pasted into a vanilla world later on and terraformed around, before several people then expanded into the new terrain. Maybe they lowered it a block to match up the sea level at that point?

Got ahead of myself and didn't even say what world it is, it's "Castle with Trench", or "Castle with Trench 97" is the specific version I downloaded many years ago. It was used in a music video for "Cube Land" but that's not where I originally found it.

I think this world was built across a range of versions from late beta to early release, so there are glitched doors and other broken stuff and it doesn't look quite right in any single version

More on this: most of the water matches the post-b1.8 sea level so it's like the whole world is newer than that, yet looks like they did survival+cheats before b1.8 added creative mode? Also hardly any tall grass except where someone went crazy with it like it was a new block, which would be b1.6. 🤔

Threw together a rough EQ for some old camcorder tapes by playing a sine sweep from my headphones into the same camcorder, then into my phone, then roughly making one flat relative to the other. It's much better, but as a side effect it now sounds like they recorded audio on a smartphone in 2003 lol

I have an old sony audio recorder that might be a much better reference mic than a phone so I'll try redo it with that tomorrow. I didn't even buy that intending to use it, but its quality is surprisingly good so it kinda ended up in the audio equipment pile instead of the collectible old tech pile.

And of course none of this magically fixes the bandwidth limits of the original mic, tape, recording circuit, etc... But it does fix the terribly uneven frequency response with weird resonances everywhere.

Always amused when Cathode Ray Dude says something like "but you don't wanna hear me yapping about that"... Like, I saw a video I knew would be almost an hour of yapping (affectionate) and I clicked on it with enthusiasm, I'm sure like 80% of the audience is the same

I put a thing on tenor last night and when I logged in there was a big red banner telling me approvals are taking longer than usual... It was approved in like 20 minutes which is the fastest I've ever seen lol (slowest was like 2 weeks or something)

Observation 1: many education systems measure "intelligence" in ways that reward memorization and bullshitting your way through things (whether or not that's the intention) Observation 2: some people view the ability of LLMs to memorize and bullshit their way through things as "intelligent" 🤔

If someone does a study on the correlation between "people who don't like LLMs" and "people who recognize flaws in their education system" I wonder how much overlap there would be.

"you're going to be left behind" i'm making homebrew for a twenty year old console, i have been left behind in the year of our lord 2012. stand a little out of my sun, please

Saw a news article about a semi local thing being built, photo of the frame of the building saying it's from 5 months ago... I was there a month ago and checked that plot of land and it was empty??? What's going on I'm so confused

Did... did someone do fake progress photos with AI and the news org got fooled by it? I'm gonna have to go check it out in person soon I think

Looked at the article again and no I'm just stupid and/or was too tired to notice... there are TWO construction projects in the area and I was looking at the other one.

The wiki content is a byproduct. If you let guys bring AI powertools in, whether it's "correct" or not is unimportant. It's just disruptive. Like you're running a community garden and someone brings in a tractor and dump truck full of fertilizer. Sure, it'll grow bigger pumpkins, but at what cost?

I emailed keychron's UK support last week and they finally got back to me... from the not-UK support saying they noticed my order was in the UK so they're forwarding my support request to UK support??? That's a little odd but alright as long as we get there in the end... fingers crossed

Interestingly the RF chip in the Cybiko limits it to like 7mW in the 433MHz band but only 2mW in the 915MHz band (if I'm reading correctly), so I think even without those bands being so crowded by modern technology it was always just worse in the US.

I don't think it's a regulatory limitation either. Unless things have changed massively since that chip was designed, I think the allowable transmit power on 915 in the US is way way higher. It's most likely a technical limitation.

I should add that I have no idea if the cybiko even sets it to maximum power in both regional models (chip is adjustable) so maybe the comparison is seriously flawed, but I would imagine they'd set it to the max if they could.

Went and bought one of the cheapo aliexpress watches that does the same thing with an RGB backlight to see how they did it. It's basically the same thing, except their reflective polarizer is double-sided and has a few extra layers which don't really functionally change anything.

Kasami@kasami.bsky.social

Heheh yeah now we're talking. I don't have something with a different color backlight that I can test with right now but this looks pretty good all things considered.

The full stackup from front to back seems to be - linear front polarizer - LCD glass - black screenprint - linear back pol - diffusing gel/glue? maybe silicone-based - aligned ref-pol (forward) - aligned ref-pol (backward / combined with above?) - quarter waveplate (not important?) - protective film

The backward reflective polarizer is to increase backlight efficiency and I believe the quarter waveplate (making a circular polarizer) is somehow related to this as it appears on some other reflective polarizer sheets you can buy for iphone screens etc.

AI bros are really coming out with phrases like "human slop" in response to human-made art that mocks AI "art" now huh. Human slop. What a time to be alive.

Maybe it's not even a new take from them, maybe they're just saying the already-loud part even louder. But at the same time it feels like they've managed to reach a new low

Weird that the cheapest way to buy "cereal box" containers for 3D printer filament (online) right now seems to be buying ones that are specifically sold as filament boxes rather than just... buying the ones sold for cereal.

...and that was by buying them on ebay and getting a sketchy tracking link which turns out was just a cover for "we literally dropship it from amazon", so it probably would've been even cheaper on amazon but I do try to avoid using it

Chrome did this entirely unprompted last night so I finally switched to firefox after putting that off for Way Too Long

SRC changed their terms of use yesterday, and released a news post with an FAQ. They make it sound like not a big deal. It's a big deal. The Creative Commons licence is gone. They claim ownership over the data now. Thread about what this means, and what we can do about it 🧵

A month and a half later I think I've got the majority of it. 4993 items, 63GB archived. It's SO much more than short promo videos, there are also longer audio things in here. The only things I haven't got now are about 300 items that immediately return a 403 error on the player manifest.

Kasami@kasami.bsky.social

"Small goldmine" here means a company uses a third-party CDN and a customized video player to run a load of short promo videos etc, conveniently left a list of *several thousand known video IDs* at the bottom of the video player JS file, and reused the same CDN credentials for them all :)

Now the next thing is there's also a couple "featured playlist" things and I don't know if they might also contain additional video IDs, so I have to add a whole featured list downloader to run through that too.
