Not only an incredible talent, but a rare talent who also thought it was funny to just voice random memes every once in a while

Warren Spector was dissuaded from doing a grimdark mean Mickey by a focus tester who, according to Warren, looked like an ex-con and insisted that the character design not ruin his childhood

Warren Spector is a strong advocate for carving out your own space in existing franchises (side-stories, separate locations, alternate universes) to have some creative control — Ultima: Worlds of Adventure, Ultima VII: Serpent Isle, Ultima Underworld all examples vs. Garriott’s mainline

Between J*vascript, my ex-favorite number, the programming language from hell, and general chumpfuckery, this has been a cromulent fuckcrustable of a day. Tommy needy drinky.

NEW in our digital archive: Explore a golden age of gaming with the Colin Williamson photography collection, featuring over 300 photos from game events and culture in 2000s Japan. 📸🗾 https://gamehistory.org/williamson-photos/

will always treasure my memories of this place (naming myself /logout, the sideways neon green timeline, etc)

seeing subreddits with "No AI art" rules get overrun by AI software (recomp / decomp / inspired-by) has ironically increased my opinion that games are Art and should be subject to similar treatment

my new standard for judging gaming news outlets is how many of them credulously repost "Richard Garriott is officially getting Ultima back" without looking into it at all

I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell me I'm holding it wrong, but, if you go to Google now and search "Atari 2600 release date" you'll get a summary telling you it was released Sept 11, 1977 - with a citation from Wikipedia. When you click the link, Wikipedia will tell you they have no idea.

I find a surprising number of times, the AI overview says something with a link, and the link does not support what was said. Having "citations" here makes things *worse* imo - you can certainly check them, but most people don't, and they give a false assurance that the claim is accurate / sourced.

I say "surprising", it's not really - I get that they're basically hallucinations or post-hoc additions to the generated summary, from whatever search results Google gave the LLM as context. What surprises me is ppl saying "they've gotten better at not inventing stuff", which is flatly untrue IME.

the big thing the rise of LLMs has revealed to me is that there is a not insignificant chunk of the population that considers cognition itself to be a frustrating and unnecessary burden

pisses me off how ever since ai can make websites, every website for "small open source indie app" and "community database" looks like this and you can just TELL they all used the same ai to vibe code it
