Effectively, we no longer have a true asylum or refugee system in the United States.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

NEW: The Trump admin just published a new regulation allowing asylum officers at USCIS to deny hundreds of thousands of “affirmative asylum” applications without an interview, sending applicants directly to deportation proceedings. This means many people will never get a chance to argue their case.

Mamdani: "As we mark 250 years ... we see the wealthiest country -- one where children go to sleep hungry while the world's first trillionaire hungers for more ... we see masked agents terrorizing our streets, eating food cooked by undocumented neighbors before spiriting them away in unmarked vans"

It’s worth watching Mamdani’s full 13-minute address. THIS is the 4 of July speech the country deserves. If you teach, consider adding it to your curriculum. If you’re a parent, watch it with your kids. This is a weekend to reflect. This speech was pitch-perfect. This speech should be remembered.

Riveting thread on the rich life, intellect, and activism of Coretta Scott. She was - and should always remain in our memory - so much more than Mrs. MLK!

Jeanne Theoharis@jeannetheoharis.bsky.social

Today would be Coretta Scott King’s 99th birthday. CSK was a lifelong freedom fighter & more of an activist than MLK when they met. As a student she’d supported the Progressive Party’s 3rd party challenge for president opposing US militarism, racism & economic inequality. We need to know her.

What’s the one thing you think you know about El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele? Tough on crime? Made the country “safe” again? Threw the worse gang leaders into CECOT? And then US deportees - because he and Trump are buddies? Think again - and watch this mind blowing exposé on PBS or YouTube.

If international law is more than just a legal theory, countries like Canada need to find the political will to prosecute perpetrators of the worst human rights crimes in their own courts. Without justice, universal jurisdiction is a hollow promise.

I testified in Sosa’s Ottawa trial, along with other experts and one of the only living massacre survivors and witnesses, Ramiro Osorio Cristales. Click on @nsarchive.bsky.social ‘s website to see the ruling + US and Guate declassified documents used in the case.
