One is an aggressive native species that has become overly dominant, causing ecosystem imbalances, habitat destruction, and biodiversity disruption. It acts quickly to take over areas disturbed by development. Its behaviour goes unchecked due to the absence of competitors. The other one is a fish.

On the Umar Zameer case, the Chief Justice of the Superior Court, Criminal Lawyers Association, Toronto Lawyers Association and Canadian Civil Liberties Association are resoundingly correct, and big dumb Doug Ford, Toronto’s Police Chief, and Toronto Police Union are disgracefully wrong. πŸπŸ™„πŸ

Note to Canada's press and other opinion-offerers. Canada does not have a strategic emergency stockpile of oil. It is not required to by the IEA *because* we export more oil than we import. Oil companies may have operational stockpiles but they aren't obliged to release those inventories. /2

2/ The TMX pipeline is not quite at capacity. Canada can export more oil via that pipeline to foreign customers. The pipeline is on Canadian soil and the terminal port also is. Canada can thank Liberal governments for both TM (the 1950s original) and TMX (the recent "twinning").

POILIEVRE: "Canada and the United Kingdom share language, culture, parliamentary government, and most important of all, folklore, including the possibly fictional legend of Robin Hood. And by the way I don't mean the medieval Marxist of 20th century retellings."

Trump: "I got probably 85 million votes. They say 78 million, 79 million. They cheated in this election too. It was just too big to rig. They cheated like hell ... a Democrats will get 3, 4, 5, 6, and even 7 ballots, and then we're supposed to win. They're professional cheaters."

I think @petergleick.bsky.social's comparisons are right on target here. I also don't think most Americans know that this is what is happening and what this means for this country. The dangers cannot be overstated at this point.

Peter Gleick@petergleick.bsky.social

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

To a lawyer, this is the most dangerous plank in the piffleswipe Pierre Poilievre’s platform. If implemented, it would represent the complete Americanization of Canada’s legal system. We don’t appoint judges to be β€˜strict’. We appoint them to find the facts and apply the law, including the Charter.

I don’t understand why people do this. Do they think by removing signs that it will make people change their vote? We should do away with signs. It’s one thing to put signs on corners or high traffic areas, but putting a sign on your lawn is asking for trouble these days with these CON thugs.
