I have to share videos of people going to vote for Lula when public transportation is being sabotaged to stop them from voting. This melts my cynic heart. Native people walking to the polls

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I made a post to MetaFilter about a fascinating mid-century English Roma poet named Mark Hyatt. He had largely been forgotten, but a long lost novel manuscript was rediscovered, and it and his old, startlingly queer poetry was published in 2023.

As the gentry try to normalize transphobia in every avenue of life, a common talking point they love to share is the alleged high 'detransition' and 'regret' rates among trans people. These allegedly high rates are completely false, and based on bunk science. 🧵

I thought it was just that a 4-hour doc would never do well in theaters, but whoa, after Bleeker Street Films was bought by billionaire Pierre Omidyar this week, "people started commenting that shows they’d bought tickets for were cancelled without warning."

for those of you who don't know the Shopping Mall lore my first RPG was Heroes Unlimited (1E) and the group that introduced me played the intro scenario which is a nice standard "supervillains are threatening the shopping mall and the A-List heroes are unavailable, HELP". It's fine. Decent intro.

það væri forvitnilegt að vita hvenær þetta viðtal var tekið upp, því nú logar frakkland í mótmælum sem byrjuðu vegna þess að menntaskólanemum fannst ótækt að þurfa að sækja skóla í 40 gráðu hitabylgju

This Wikipedia page on the names used for Iceland is not even wrong. I’ll admit it gives me pause that about half the time when I land on an English-language Wikipedia page where I have specialized knowledge, the information is actually worse than merely being incorrect.

I‘ve believed for years that the first Marvel film I saw was Iron Man 3, but about 30 mins into The Avengers I realized I’d seen it in theaters. I remembered almost nothing about it, and having just watched it I couldn’t tell you what the plot is.

cynic that I am, I expected there to be unsavory shenanigans regarding Dolly Parton’s estate, but not even in the misanthropic depths of my imagination did I think the shenanigans would involve an arms deal with Haiti

Y’all, I hate to rain on the dead bot parade, but the Yandex data center destruction doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted social media bots. I made temporal graphs of X posts about AfD around the time of the attack and there’s no sign of a sudden dip or residual impact on that conversation.

There were no children around where we lived when I was little. My only "friend" was my younger sister. We played alone or talked the ears off the adult neighbors around us. We had no social manners or boundaries - walking into people's sun porches and yards to play as we liked.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?
