Can I buy like a whole state worth of policy debate teams?? Cause that's what I'd do. . . . also a real Frank Stella painting or a Calder mobile.

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

There is no difference between “attorney” and “lawyer” in American parlance and anyone who tells you there is is lying and engaged in motivated reasoning.

Katie Zacharia's CURRENT LINKEDIN lists her as having been the GENERAL COUNSEL of a California Nonprofit from January 2024 to March 2025!!! This isn't just 2011 or on podcasts.

Judd Legum@juddlegum.bsky.social

As I first reported on Monday, Katie Zacharia is not a lawyer and has never been licensed to practice law. The WSJ reports that she took the California Bar Exam but failed. Nevertheless, Zacharia appeared on media programs for YEARS and repeatedly called herself a lawyer. Here's a super cut:

I know I'm a broken record on this, but one part of what is going on is that people have literally no idea what the US immigration system actually is; effectively, that there are no pathways into the country legally for someone who wants to wait in line.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

New Marist poll of Texas finds 61% say undocumented immigrants should stay in US if meet certain requirements. Only 35% say they should leave. A majority of noncollege white men (Trump base) says stay. Supports my case (see piece/thread below) that Trump opened way for new pro-immigrant consensus

They do not care that Ilhan is a citizen. They do not care that the vast majority of Somali Americans are citizens. They do not care that any of us are citizens, either. Our rights and dignity do not matter to these people. So we have to make it matter All of us. Together.

This is great and also I always learn something.

It's that special time of year where we talk about the City Budget. Based on the questions I still receive I should be doing this twice a year. leaflet.pub/dae3de62-299...

Donation advice for the close Minnesota State Senate races. You don’t need to donate to the ones who already hit their spending cap! The ones below are the ones that could really use your help. If you’re going to, do it soon so they can put the money to use!

That the death penalty is morally indefensible is the thing I am most sure I am right about. This specific story and experience is horrifying; the entire machinery of death should be abandoned immediately.

Thomas Frampton@tframpton.bsky.social

Justice Blackmun (30 years ago): "Rather than continue to coddle the Court's delusion that the desired level of fairness has been achieved and the need for regulation eviscerated, I feel morally and intellectually obligated simply to concede that the death penalty experiment has failed."

I mean yes, but any law congress would pass now would most likely erode the only privacy and consumer protections we have now through preemption of state laws. Can we please try in January instead?

Brandi Bennett@bbennettesq.bsky.social

Been begging for federal privacy law for a decade now. C'mon. Congress has elections to win, but laws to pass.

The person who sat in the car received a longer sentence than the shooters. Just using a tool passed by the legislature to adjust his sentence. The bigger context is that we have received over 400 applicants and only petitioned for 4.

One thing I need to make clear is that Kansas, both the state and the university, has been invoking John Brown and abolitionism for years, maybe decades. He’s painted on the interior of our state capitol. The hype videos are merely repurposing a heritage that already exists.

This is Baxter's favorite children's book and I mail it to everyone I know who has a baby.

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

It’s the 90th anniversary today of the publication of a children’s book which Franco denounced because its lead character was a pacifist. Hitler ordered the book burned as “degenerate democratic propaganda”, and various Americans saw it as promoting fascism, anarchism, or... er, communism

That understates it. It recalls Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War, identifying Missouri as the immoral villian that needed to be vanquished. No punches are pulled.

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.

Folk went to work for Trump *after* Trump gave a speech in 2015 chock full of antisemitic stereotypes and *after* Trump enacted an unconstitutional travel ban for Muslims.

Labor Day Pop quiz!📝 Why does my opponent have 0 Labor union endorsements? A) Because he is a partner at the country’s most notorious union-busting law firm. B) Because he worked for Trump. C) Because he has spent a majority of his career defending corporations and getting rich.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

Ed Markey is a champion for consumer protection and the right to a jury trial and his victory is absolutely fantastic. (Also never throw your trans friends under the bus, GOOD LORD.)

Bucking a push for younger leadership this election season, Sen. Ed Markey, 80, won the Democratic nomination against Rep. Seth Moulton, 47, who said that his party needed new leaders. n.pr/3T7Kfvu

I agree completely with this It's incredibly infantilizing! Like you don't believe women are capable of moral bankruptcy. Functionally, how is that different from misogyny? Feminism is not "women are all good." Feminism is "women are entire human people."

Based on the overwhelming consensus that I’ve heard in both public feedback and private conversations from government officials, service providers, encampment residents, and public health experts, I do not believe we are prepared to responsibly close the encampments beginning tomorrow.

Scoop: In a private call with top officials, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her lashed at requests to delay a homeless encampment sweep. She attributed her anger to “fuckery” being said about her in public, 3 officials told @axios.com . One state rep logged off in frustration. www.axios.com/local/twin-c...

My question tangentially related to the Mayor Her stuff: the announcement about closing encampments came after the April investigation started. Is there a relationship between them and what is it? No one I know is pro the closure but my understanding is the SPPD may be.
