Seth was hands down the WRONG kind of young leadership. He’s too right of center to even call himself a moderate and is too disconnected from democratic ideology. As a nearly lifelong MA resident, we do need to fix a very serious housing affordability issue that is extending statewide.

It had nothing to do with age. Moulton turned on our trans family the second it seemed politically convenient, while Markey stood by his principles. That’s what this primary was about.

No, it also sucks when you realize the 80 year old who doesn’t suck probably won’t be around as long, meaning that seat could abruptly be handed to a younger candidate who does suck and will keep the seat for far too long.

Ed Markey is in excellent health as evidenced by his campaign tirelessly traveling all across the state, not to mention he was face-to-face confronting DOGE. And the same voters who elected him also elected a progressive governor who shares his values and would appoint his replacement.

nope.. just the contrary in fact.. simply noting high % of nazis among the older politicians.. w/notable exceptions of course.. bc few older politicians remain humanistic after getting used to many years of power.. & old-age accountability chances decrease fast.. in short: après moi le déluge...

The democratic voters of Massachusetts chose the candidate who reflects their values and you want to take that choice away which is clearly anti-democratic. And you’re justifying it with a bunch of lies about that candidate being a Nazi because he’s old.

It’s almost like it’s not about age, gender, or race but weather or not a candidate is a center right piece of shit pushing the Democratic Party further right… please take note democrats.

A freshly shat turd is "newer" than leftovers from a couple days ago, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna choose to eat it

Love this. I voted for Ed this lunchtime. Money grabbing Moulton was never an option. People who think old people are incapable by virtue of having been around the Sun a set number of times should talk to someone, because not all 80 year olds are as blinkered in their worldview as they are.

jfc, you do actually say in the article Moulton threw trans people under the bus, why not bring it to the headline, so people actually want to read your article?!

tl,dr “Given the choice between an old codger who has actually fought for good policies and a young coward willing to throw trans people under the bus for political expedience, Massachusetts chose the fighter.”

Just because a candidate is young doesn’t mean they are any good. I am in favor of new leadership but only from people who are actually progressive and not just… gross. Anti-trans assholes are not getting my vote, no matter what age. Comments missing that point — not paying enough attention.

While there is a push for younger leadership there is also a significant push against milquetoast "centrist" anti-trans candidates like Moulton. What Third Way sponsored "journalist" wrote this stupid piece.?

it would take like thirty seconds of research into Markey’s platform and stellar track record of letting minorities and the downtrodden take the stage whenever possible to have prevented you saying this nonsense. Markey is not a ruler, never has been.

It's one matter wanting younger PROGRESSIVE leadership. What Moulton was a right winger masquerading as a Democrat. Someone else like him is Tom Souzzi. Moulton would have been a terrible candidate. Someone throwing trans people under the bus isn't it.

As a former Bostonian, let me just say: Markey is personable, he's out there and always engaging with people, his office always responds to messages, and he's been keyed into important issues. Would it be better if he was younger? Sure. But there's a reason he's well-liked.

It seems good that a bad person lost this contest. But can someone explain to me why someone who is 80 is running for office? Is it just a belief by Markey that no one else can replace him, or simple ordinary political egoism or what?

The main issue would be a shitty candidate with serious support was in the field early, so that encourages "back the incumbent". This is another place where ranked voting (where everyone could skip the transphobe) could have made a huge impact

“Is it just a belief by Markey that no one else can replace him, or simple ordinary political egoism or what?” These are the only two reasons you can think of? 🙄

This is the second straight primary where some reactionary centrist youth ran against markey, lost, and then pundits pretended it’s a sign that people don’t want change rather than it being a sign that people don’t want reactionary freaks. Markey might be ancient but he’s not a transphobe.

Talk about policy you cowards. Markey won because of his policy positions. Moulton's assorted investments in AI and his panicky anti-trans statements cost him, regardless of what the Boston Globe might bleat.

moulton used his age as a disguise to shield his dog dirt politics and filthy bigotry, the man should get out of politics permanently. he should probably leave massachusetts permanently as well

This is why it's soooooo difficult to support NPR. Was the reason he won because he was older? Or because he is was more progressive? And progressives are beating pre- complying transphobes? Where is the lede here?🤔🙄 We don't need NY Times lite. We need knowledgeable, accurate news.

It’s not about age, it’s about policy goddamnit!! I wish Markey would’ve stepped down and found someone younger with good policy positions to endorse. But he didn’t, and I’m not voting for someone who I don’t trust to protect my civil rights.

I mean, in the sense that he doesn't actually believe in anything he says - just says whatever he thinks pundits will approve of h I guess he's not, but i don't think that's any better.

He is anti-trans. He picked up the bigoted talking points and has been running with them for two years. If he refused to discuss the issue, that would have fit your suggestion. It still would have been bad, but it's a different thing.

According to his Wikipedia article, he’s not anti trans, he just has some reservations about trans people in sports. Look at this voting record: fully in favor of trans rights supporting LGBTQ. He even cosponsored most of those bills and voted AGAINST the anti trans sports act, calling it extreme.

Come on. You cannot, at this fucking point, POSSIBLY still be arguing in good faith that it isn't harmful to trans people to cede any ground on the sports thing. Banning trans athletes doesn't even protect cis athletes. I am a trans person telling you point blank: this is harmful rhetoric.

So he took a stance he doesn’t believe because it was expedient, selling out a vulnerable group as they face intense attacks, and this is supposed to be good?

you’re so right, bestie, he made the calculated decision to have trans people fall on a sword for him. as have you. which minority group is next? how many more do we offer up to the nazis before they’ll be satisfied? how exciting for people like yourself, for whom this is all entirely theoretical

In my mind i replace "trans" with "Mexican" and then see how it makes me feel. I don't want to be thrown to the wolves, so I have to assume the same is true for trans people. So we have to hold the line, together. Or they'll pick us off, group by group.

carrying water for bigots when expressing your opinion does in fact make you a bigot yourself, you hollow astroturf sockpuppet, you disingenuous shill (whoever runs this account should delete it and self-reflect in the most uncompromising ways)

The person who vocally supported trans rights won and the person who opposed them lost. Remember when Marcry’s last dnc-sponsored opponent 6 years ago— that Kennedy kid only donors liked? He opposed pot legalization because it eliminates reason for cops to search a car on a traffic stop?

wow was that the entire context of this primary? is that the major takeaway here, or was there perhaps a massive human rights issue at the heart of this?
