Lost half a day’s work yesterday when #MicrosoftWord reverted to an older version of the document I was writing on my iPad without any warning, despite autosave being on. How can their software be so 💩? 😡 #Micro$lop

Let’s call it the privatisation and corporatisation of the history of human endeavour, of civilisation itself. All you need to do is allow your soul to be digitised and turned into data. What remains of you will be human sludge and slurry. Industrial effluent."

We have to stop choosing to make the world worse to maintain existing hierarchies

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

From an outsider’s perspective it’s rather puzzling how #Ireland simply ignored the possibility of becoming a global higher education hub, failing to capitalise on #Brexit and the political instability in the #US…

The building I work in at #UCD bears more than a passing resemblance to this iconic development on London’s South Bank, even down to the recessed ceiling blocks. ‘Uncompromising’ is the word, but not without their charms…

When questioned about this, Elrond explained that dealing with the One Ring was an administrative services problem. He had research projects to focus on. He requested he still be invited to the One Ring Committee though, and promised that in these he would continue to provide his extensive advice.

John Bull@garius.eurosky.social

Eventually, Elrond's account of the One Ring ended, overruning the meeting time by 20mins. Despite his lengthy discourse on the subject, everyone later noted that, in the minutes, Elrond had avoided giving himself any actions related to actually dealing with the One Ring problem.

Universities are to tell an Oireachtas committee that they are at capacity and teetering on a cliff-edge unless the Government addresses a funding gap in higher education.

Irish universities have followed the UK model of charging high fees to non-EU students to subsidise teaching and research. A sharp fall in visa approvals combined with a €250,000 shortfall in government funding is now putting the squeeze on university funding. #HigherEducation #Ireland #SpéirGhorm

This was of course entirely predictable—and indeed predicted (see below). What’s new is that, like the UK before it, the Irish government’s own clampdown on international visas is the source of the problem. Additional government funding is urgently needed to keep the university sector competitive.

Dr Keith 🎃 Wilson@keithwilson.eu

Concerningly, #Ireland is now following the same model, increasing the numbers of non-EU students who pay exorbitant fees to subsidise the educations of local and EU students. This works well as long as people want to come here—they do, partly thanks to #Brexit and the US political situation—but is…

At present, government funding only covers 60% of the cost of teaching, so universities have to make up the shortfall somehow. Hard to see how this can be resolved without urgent government intervention, which is why (among other things) the ongoing talks on public sector pay are so important.
