This is wonderful.

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

I’m not joking when I say this was some of the finest journalism written about 9/11. Nothing captured the moment as perfectly, using satire and, often, just beautiful writing to put into words what we were feeling. The “woman bakes cake” story still makes me tear up.

I was just talking to a friend today about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - new books every month, totally for free, for kids ages 1-5. My son was part of the program - this is a copy of the letter that came with his last book, right after his 5th birthday.

Very interesting analysis of why South Carolina is always in the Democratic primary discussion and how calendar changes could affect things. Still room for a broader discussion that includes how NH will continue to be first, because of its state law, and how that might ripple through the process.

Dante Atkins@danteatkins.bsky.social

Seeing a lot of "the DNC picked South Carolina to ensure a centrist nominee" and, no, it may feel good and validate your priors to believe that, but that's not what's happening at all. First, for obvious reasons, the DNC is going to have an early state that has a substantial Black population. 1/x

Really interesting chart, if this is accurate.

Ethan@ethanhamm.bsky.social

Someone made a chart of where in America the highest concentrations of each team's diaspora pop live and Massachusetts is well represented!

Doing a quick spot check does bring up some concerns. There are apparently a LOT more Bosnians in the St. Louis and Chicago areas than in Manchester, NH. I wish I had the sourcing for this chart.

Montgomery will remain in prison. His convictions on charges of assault, falsifying physical evidence, witness tampering and abusing his daughter’s corpse were affirmed.

It's not 1536, but Anne Boleyn has taken over the news. Recently a team of computer scientists, electrical engineers and a historical novelist think they have discovered the “true face” of Anne (& her mother) by applying AI-based computational facial recognition to Holbein sketches. The catch? /1

They’re at it again. None of this is valuable historical research. It’s about exploiting historical artifacts and historians to develop computer vision further and to make a soft cultural argument for surveillance tech. This nonsense has been going on since c2010.

And then the whole left side of my body was sensitive. My boyfriend was idly tapping on my knee as we sat on the couch, and it became torturous. Brushing my hair was weird because the brush zinged my scalp on the left side of my head.

I got the shingles vaccine as soon as I turned 50, and I proselytize to my friends and family about it all the time. It’s extremely effective, and studies show it could also be the most effective single thing you can do to prevent dementia. www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-moo...

I had a band of sores around one side of my torso. I could eventually get some pain relief after the scabs fell off and I could use a lidocaine patch for half the day. Less pain for work or less pain for sleep? Tough choice.

At today's average gas prices, Americans are spending ~2.9% of their paycheck on filling up. A decent change in consumer behavior happens at ~3-3.25% (roughly $4/gal), but really snarls demand at 4%. By 5%, Americans are busting out the bikes.

Any dog or cat lovers out there? My friend's aunt rescues and rehomes neglected animals on Cape Cod. But she's in danger of losing the home where she does this work because of back taxes. As she works on a long-term solution, she could use some help. Consider giving if you can!

I really want to see this movie. Scientists as heroes, the importance of gathering facts before making big decisions that could get people killed, and Brendan Fraser as Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower!

Alicia Hastey really sums up the core essence of journalism in her note. Good journalism adheres to standards. Stick to those standards, regardless of what labels others put on you.

The video of the latest ICE shooting starts by showing several agents wrestling a man to the ground. If you see that sort of video autoplaying on your feed and don't want to see someone killed, you have a few seconds to scroll past it or hit stop.

Once again, because of the actions of ICE agents in Minnesota, I feel the need to share this again: You can turn off autoplay in the "Content and media" settings or toggle sound off by default if you don't want to see/hear these videos.

And again, this is not a call to ignore what's happening. Just advice for those who want to avoid the trauma of seeing this. And a call to my fellow journalists to report accurately.

It would be a service to their readers if CNN and others who run these pieces would note that under New Hampshire state law, it will hold the first primary. This story notes that the DNC "demoted New Hampshire" last time around but doesn't toss in a sentence to say that it went first anyways.

Democrats are kicking off the process of setting their 2028 presidential primary calendar this month, after 12 states submitted applications to lead the process. https://cnn.it/3NQNOTI

Officials in Maine are growing increasingly concerned that ICE is planning major actions in that state.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

BREAKING — Mayor of Lewiston, Maine posts on FB that ICE is coming to the city imminently. This confirms my reporting the agency is planning a surge in the city and state generally. Lewiston is home to a large Somali-American population, which made up 4.6% of the population as of the 2020 census.

A corrective to much of the reporting on CES.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

I've seen some bullshit at CES, but I've never seen such an aggressive gaslighting - AI that doesn't work but is reported as if it does, robots that do not exist that are discussed as if they do, broken demos that are reported as functional. It's a disgrace, I am disgusted.

The cellphone video taken by the ICE officer who shot Renee Good in Minneapolis has been released. It is being shared widely. So, another reminder that you can turn off autoplay in the "Content and media" settings or toggle sound off by default if you don't want to see/hear these videos.

Based on the post from JD Vance sharing this video, the White House considers it to be exculpatory for ICE. It provides some more information, such as the words that were exchanged, but it doesn't indicate whether the officer was struck, something other video analysis indicates likely didn't happen.

It also does clearly show Good turning her steering wheel all the way to the right as she begins accelerating, which would support the idea that the vehicle was turning away from the officer. Hopefully, NYT, WaPo, Bellingcat and others will refresh their video analyses with this one.

The BCA's Force Investigations Unit was established after the murder of George Floyd to provide unbiased investigations into uses of force by law enforcement. The BCA says it will be ready to reengage if the FBI changes course again and seeks a transparent joint investigation into the ICE shooting.

wmur.comMinnesota officials say the feds have blocked them from investigating ICE shootingThe head of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Thursday that the U.S. attorney’s office had barred it from taking part in the investigation.

The NY Times does some of the best video analysis out there. This one is based on videos that have been shared publicly, so there may be additional videos (including one taken by the shooter) that could shed additional light on what happened in Minneapolis. This is disturbing video.

nytimes.comVideo: Videos Contradict Trump Administration Account of ICE Shooting in MinneapolisAn analysis of footage from three camera angles shows that the motorist was driving away from — not toward — a federal officer when he opened fire.

An interesting thread. Law enforcement agencies commonly consider it an assault when a car heads toward them or if a car takes off when an officer has their hand on the door. And the law backs them up and could apply to that first shot in MN. But there were other shots fired...

Corey Rayburn Yung@coreyryung.bsky.social

My initial take on the criminal law governing the ICE shooting in MN: 609.066 of the MN Code controls a self-defense claim for a "peace officer" under state law. I'm not going to consider federal law given the capture of the DOJ by the Trump administration. 1/

The mother of the woman killed by ICE has identified her as Renee Nicole Good, 37, saying she lived in the Twin Cities with her partner. Other reports have said the passenger in the vehicle identified her as her wife and said they have a 6-year-old child, though that is not in this report right now.
