Rowling *never* writes about women’s rights, workplace discrimination or the threats to women from predatory men. I tracked her posts for five months: Well over 200 hateful transphobic smears. Not a single post about women’s actual concerns or needs None

It feels somewhat apt to be reading Jenn Ashworth 's near future eco gothic story 'The White Lady of Morecambe' on a night when Storm Boelo is battering Morecambe in the present.

Two things have been bobbing around my brain since Pictcon. 1 How long do Selkies live? 2 Do I know anyone who can point me to respurces on early 19th century submersible craft?

Note that there are groups actively working towards a an ethical AI but with regards to the UK creative sector this is not a position that can be considered valid for multiple reasons. I'd suggest interested parties follow @ajlunited.bsky.social as a starting point for informed discussion

By someone absolutely not related to me. This is a really moving novel set in the classical music scene. Good to see it available again.

Thrilled that my once-big-5-published, newly rewritten novel is a STARRED EDITORS PICK on PUBLISHERS WEEKLY!!! Despite raves from THE SUNDAY TIMES, Ashenazy etc. it needed to lose those thousands of excess words!!! 😍#classicalmusic #cello #orchestra #Mahler #musicsky books2read.com/u/3y5LEZ

Simon Clarke was 10 months old at the time of Live Aid so that's some memory he's got going there...

Peter Smith@redpeter99.bsky.social

Unlike Simon Clarke, I was alive during the 1970s. A combination of low inequality, low crime and aspects of culture made 1976 one of the happiest years on record in the UK. The IMF bailout had zero impact. Lesson for Simon, happiness is not just a function of wealth.

“Connect a moment with someone on a bus, in the woods, on the porch of an abandoned house, and you find the world you’ve been looking for.” That sums up how Andrea Hairston's works describe community building as organic, unstructured, warm supportive spaces.

There seems to be a spate of reports on AI bros warning about their creations this week. Oddly there was less attention paid when a number of women in the industry said similar things a year, two years, even five years ago (notably a lot of them were Black and Brown women).

A while ago I couldn't find my copy of Joanna Russ' The Female Man so I bought a new one. This weekend i found the missing copies. Yes, I already had it twice. So now I have three

What I love about Western democracy is you can bung a political party £ 36 million earned from criminal activity & most media will continue to point at asylum seekers & migrant care workers with families as the barbarians at the gate we need to defend ourselves from 🙄.

For the day shift, I wrote about Kim Stanley Robinson's "Green Mars"

Kev McVeigh@kevmcv.bsky.social

I often think there should be more reviews of shorter SFF so here's my latest, on KSR's 1985 novella "Green Mars" almostwisdomreviews.wordpress.com/2026/09/06/g...

Sorted out a book shelf to put a favourite author's books in one place and in order, mostly because I mislaid one I wanted to check. 32 volumes, 22 signed.

Looking at tourist/interesting places I've not yet been to that are manageable for a short break. Never been to either Oxford or Cambridge, mid or S Wales, E Anglia, New Forest/ S Coast, Any suggestions?

Yesterday was the 13th anniversary of Seamus Heaney's death. Last year I walked the Moyola near his childhood home. I wrote something I'll share in the next post.

The sound of water rushing over stone Chaffinch and robin squabble for demesne A Speckled Wood flutters by, not stopping mirrored water breaks for trout rising, And by that old rail bridge i understand Why Seamus Heaney loved this, his homeland

Yesterday was Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's 228th anniversary. Here's views of Casa Magni in San Terenzo where she lived for a few months in 1822.
