a pain felt by so many of us that build open source tools that are widely used. Take whatever money you'd spend on a night out and treat yourself to the satisfaction of contributing to an open source project today.

It's a beautiful morning here at the Knowledge Commons! ☀️ We've launched a MAJOR upgrade to KCWorks with a whole host of new features you've asked for. 😍 ✅ More streamlined upload form ✅ Custom theming for collections ✅ Improved feeds to Google Scholar ✅ Extensive accessibility improvements
You can still use the big corporate platforms to amplify your message, of course, but you need to own (or at least trust the owners of) your primary working spaces. As much as you can, be sure the platforms you rely on share your values. Love, your friends at Knowledge Commons ()

Who wants to hear about copyright? I'm heading up a Knowledge Commons webinar on The Basics of Copyright, Licensing, and Permissions on November 11th at 12PM Eastern Time (UTC -5). Register here: msu.zoom.us/meeting/regi... Note: This talk will focus on US copyright as that's where KC is located.
This is a huge problem for securing the future of open research. If you're writing a grant, consider asking your open infrastructure provider how you can include them in your proposal. Love, Your friends at Knowledge Commons
Where does open infrastructure funding actually go? Only 29% reaches the infrastructure itself. The rest funds the research built on top of it. See the findings from our 2026 State of Open Infrastructure report: investinopen.org/state-of-ope... #OAWeek

One reason among many that the humanities should reclaim leadership among its areas of study. My own LEADING GENEROUSLY is one place to start.

As many of you will have seen, Knowledge Commons was hit with a serious cybersecurity incident late last week. We relaunched yesterday and posted a preliminary explainer, but I wanted to dig in a bit further today. It was a painful journey back, but the work has us on a better path forward.
That said, we're still contending with significant risks in the current open-source environment. We hope that we'll have the opportunity in the next year to bring some like-minded folks together to help us design a secure open-source ecosystem for the Commons.

All areas of Knowledge Commons and our network nodes are up and running again. ❤️ Late last week, Knowledge Commons experienced a cybersecurity incident. As soon as members of our team discovered evidence of intrusion, our team took the site offline and began emergency investigation and remediation.

Join us for the “Publish, Review, Curate (PRC): Shaping the future of scholarly publishing” launch event, where Ludo Waltman @ludowaltman.bsky.social, Scientific Director, Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University, will give a keynote talk.
I first wrote about the need to recognize peer reviews as acts of scholarship back in 2006. It's a dream deferred, but not a dream denied. We're going to make this happen.
In the Publish-Review-Curate model, peer review is given the recognition it deserves! The current publication system makes this important work invisible and doesn’t properly recognize it. Learn more about the Publish-Review-Curate model. 👇 publish-review-curate.org

What an *amazing coincidence* that the moves to undermine public higher education by shifting its costs from the government to students and families begins in earnest in the 1970s.
2. Any discussion about higher ed that misses that women and people of color were largely excluded until the *1970s* misses the fulcrum of these debates. 6/

Maybe it's time for higher education institutions to build an alternative cloud.
