1/ In 2024, I filed a false claims act lawsuit against Elsevier, Springer, Wiley & Informa alleging they systematically overcharged US federal grants for article processing. The gov declined to intervene and now it's public. Some thoughts on what this is, and what it isn't:

a pain felt by so many of us that build open source tools that are widely used. Take whatever money you'd spend on a night out and treat yourself to the satisfaction of contributing to an open source project today.

Last 24 hours three strangers have called out my name on the street, I’ve said “make sure you vote!” and they’ve said “I will!” it’s like being the mayor of a small town where people randomly burst into song

🧵🧵🧵 The NY Times posted a 15-minute video today in which I got to tell NYT what’s wrong with its coverage. They said they saw my critical posts on Bluesky and invited me to do a video with them to air my grievances. Weird, right? I didn’t hold back. I blasted their sanewashing of MAGA extremism.

More to be done, but this is a HUGE step for thousands of journals that have been discounted for years, because they could literally not be counted.

Any and all models of open peer review are welcome. I am super excited that people will be able to experiment with this feature, and so we want to talk to those who have it on their mind or have talked about it with their team.

We have to acknowledge this tension in the #OpenScience movement. Scientific Culture is about how scientists understand science, but also how society understands and interfaces with the institution of science. Hard for OS to strengthen both. This blog explains: www.scholcommlab.ca/2025/10/21/t...

scholcommlab.caTensions in Open Science and Scientific CultureOpen Science (OS) holds a powerful promise: to serve society by providing universal public access to knowledge. But, as we continue to see OS be adopted across the world, it becomes increasingly cl…

Conversations of #openscience are waning, and I feel we missed boat of making OS about changing culture to one that truly opens science to society. Real shame OS has remained just about opening research outputs. I've argued against this framing for years now, but wish I'd articulated it better.

Sustainability is a term I want people to define when they use it. I really like how OBP addressed this in their 18th birthday celebration last week. Every time sustainability crops up, it fails to recognise that this question applies to commercial publishing, which is far less sustainable.

PERSPECTIVE: despite some crowing that this was 'inevitable' etc, the article covers the period 2009-2026. In 2021 the estimated number of Diamond OA was 29,000 journals. Over the 15 year period covered, 440 journals have flipped. As a proportion of the 2021 number, that's 1.5%. Hardly an exodus.

Thanks! Reaction has been interesting. Some diamond oa advocates don't like we're pointing to problems or enabling a narrative that it's unsustainable. But our intent was to name the phenomenon (Fractures!) and to call out that systemic supports are needed

Still looking for librarians to complete our survey on how your library actually makes the decision to support OA initiatives - any country, any initiative. 📚

Caroline Ball@heroicendeavour.eurosky.social

Librarians, assemble! ✊ We're running a short, anonymous survey (10-15 mins) exploring how libraries actually decide whether to fund collective, fee-free open access, or not. Where does the money come from? What evidence carries the most weight? And what happens when the answer is no? Thank you!

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

Do people understand that this is just starting? The US Gov declining only means that we are now carrying this forward ourselves. I have had a few conversations with folks that thought this meant the case was over.

#openaccess colors are BROKEN. Gold, Bronze, Green, Diamond, Hybrid... They are journal-centric, mix access and business models of journals, etc. We formed a working group to recommend how OpenAlex could implement a new classification system. Here's our report: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
