Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different
You will never walk alone.
Meet the people behind EDGE 👋

What do yesterday’s ST results imply for liberal democracy? In our ongoing nationwide survey, we asked about support for liberal democracy (following doi.org/10.1177/0010...). Acceptance of & ambivalence toward illiberal action are worryingly widespread, though majorities reject each transgression.
📣 New op-ed in Süddeutsche Zeitung: What the data say about the “Brandmauer”
I summarize key findings from a study with @anninahermes.bsky.social across 57 democracies
➡️ Far-right parties don’t get weaker in government, they get stronger (~6 points by the next election)

A few things (international) commentatoes should remember. Only 2 million people live in Sachsen-Anhalt. Half of Berlin, a tenth of NRW. Around 400k will vote AfD. Even with this strong result, 80% of people living in S-A will not have voted for the AfD. In a state that is a far-right stronghold.
A major milestone for #DemocracyResearch. 🏛️
MEDem has been included in the ESFRI Roadmap, recognizing its role in advancing the empirical study of Democracy in Europe. 🇪🇺
Thank you to everyone who helped bring us to this point! 🙏 #ResearchInfrastructure⚙️

💡New! Britain’s two-party era is ending, but Brexit is still shaping British politics. By @sarahobolt.bsky.social of @lsegovernment.bsky.social.
blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp...
British politics is resembling the rest of Europe:
• Multi-party competition has replaced two-party dominance
• Challengers are on the rise, esp. the populist right
• Political realignment centres on identity politics (incl Brexit)
But FPTP is poorly suited to this fragmentation
